For Training and Equipping People to Grow in Jesus Christ

Mission: Home Base

Crossroads PCA is a home base at the crossroads of Northern Virginia

for training and equipping people to grow in Jesus Christ,

and making Him known in our neighborhoods,

our nation, and the world.

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” – Matthew 7:24

Dear Crossroads Family and Friends,

Over 35 years have passed since I arrived at Marine Corps Base Quantico as a new Second Lieutenant. Twenty years later, I had the tremendous privilege of leading the effort to plant Crossroads as a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America near Quantico. For over 15 years, the members of Crossroads PCA have warmly welcomed many hundreds of people who have moved to the crossroads of Northern Virginia. Fort Belvoir Army Base is nearby, and many people in our community work at the Pentagon further north. The Lord has brought countless members of the military, as well as many government contractors, civil servants, and civilians to our rented facilities (two public schools and a Boys & Girls Club) for worship, discipleship, prayer, fellowship, and much more. Our vision is clear:

Crossroads serves as a home base at the crossroads of Northern Virginia for training and equipping people to grow in Jesus Christ and making him known in our neighborhoods, our nation and the world.

While we face many obstacles in this high-cost area, we are certain that it is time for us to take a bold step of faith and purchase a facility that will serve as a central hub for all we do. I believe a church facility serves the purpose of facilitating the ministry of the church. In addition to weekly corporate worship and fellowship, our new home base will facilitate the life-changing process of discipleship. A more permanent home base will also serve as a place for outreach. We need your help to raise the funds necessary for

• A spacious area for corporate worship to accommodate at least 250 people.

• Office space and rooms for a nursery, Christian education, prayer, etc.

• A kitchen to support fellowship meals and celebrations.

Our solid base of committed members has allowed us to flourish as a congregation despite inadequate facilities and high turnover. Please consider joining us in the exciting process of purchasing a new home base!

Sincerely in Christ, Don

Our Origins

By God’s grace, we brought Crossroads Presbyterian Church to life in 2002, but its history began many years earlier. Pastor Ron Bossom, of Harvester Presbyterian in Springfield, Virginia, had a church planting vision to develop and birth a “church within a church.” Harvester wanted to grow and train a group of members from within the church who would become a separate, cohesive congregation before ever leaving Harvester. They could then move out to a new home base as a completely functioning, self-supporting congregation.

In 1982, Ron met a young Marine Corps lieutenant named Don Sampson, who attended Harvester for a short time, and they stayed in touch over many years. Don eventually felt a calling into ministry, went to seminary to pursue his calling, and felt a more specific call to church planting. Ron asked Don to prayerfully consider coming to Virginia to lead the church planting effort for a new daughter church in Woodbridge, and the vision God had given to Harvester began to come to life.

Two small group Bible studies grew to four, and after almost a year-and-a-half of preparation, the “due date” for the new congregation’s birth had arrived. The Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) denomination officially designated Crossroads a member congregation, with its pastor and two new ruling elders. At its annual church retreat (with a Labor and Delivery theme), Harvester celebrated the birth of its daughter congregation, complete with shower gifts of communion trays, coffee urns, nursery supplies, and many other necessities. The first official worship service occurred on May 12th, 2002, at Potomac High School in Woodbridge. It was, appropriately, Mother’s Day.

The new group chose the name Crossroads because like ancient Israel, the Washington, D.C. area serves as a crossroads of many people and cultures. With a ministry to military and civilian individuals and families, Crossroads continues to serve as a home base for training, equipping, and sending God’s people not only to Woodbridge and the surrounding area, but out into all the world.

"I have raised you up . . . that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth"

–Exodus 9:16

Our Journey

After nearly ten years at Potomac High School we moved to an elementary school for a short time, and then to our present facility at the General Heiser Boys and Girls Club in Dumfries.

We have been thankful to the Lord for providing the Dumfries Boys and Girls Club (BGC) as our home base since 2012. We have some much needed storage space and our weekly setup process has been greatly simplified. Although we spend many hours each week for set-up/tear-down, we feel grateful to have our facility.

In this location, God has strengthened essential, corporate ministries such as worship and fellowship. Our pastoral staff continues to faithfully lead us in transformational, God-centered, and Biblically based worship. Caring fellowship has been a key attribute of Crossroads, and naturally overflows from our faith into loving and helping relationships. At the BGC we have been edified by the fellowship ministry and have enjoyed many congregational dinners, special events, and community outreach events.

The “Why Now?”

While thankful for the Boys and Girls Club, we see limitations to our current location here in Prince William County. We have been blessed by the worship space, however the gym is not without distractions, nor is it aesthetically welcoming. The weekly set up, while streamlined, continues to create a large, weekly time commitment for many.

Our nursery, a vital ministry to the many young families in our community, meets in a room that is woefully inadequate for our covenant children. Our Christian Education is currently being held at capacity, and does not allow for further growth or more class offerings. Likewise, access to both floors is limited for our brothers and sisters who require a ramp, which is located outside the building with no options inside. The conditions of the building vary from week to week, and we often face HVAC problems, locked doors, or janitorial challenges on any given Sunday.

Over the years, as the Boys and Girls Club has increased its programming, our access to the building has been greatly reduced. We have lost office space and no longer have access to the building for weekly events such as Women’s or Men’s ministry meetings, care groups, or office space for pastoral or diaconal counseling. Seasonal events such as conferences, Vacation Bible School, youth lock-ins, or special community events are also out of the question. Full time access to a more permanent home base will better enable our vibrant ministries. As a result we continue to search for a new platform for our mission.

Goal: A Visible Presence

God has called all of us to make Christ known here at the crossroads of Northern Virginia. We believe He is calling us now to identify and purchase a property that will serve as our home base, that we might become a more visible presence in our community.

Having our own home base will allow us to more effectively facilitate many ministries: Christian Education, Nursery, Women’s Ministry, Men’s Ministry, Special Needs Ministry, Youth Ministry, Worship and Fellowship. It will greatly simplify setup demands each Sunday, allowing our members to serve in other capacities, and it will make the Friendship Class more accessible to families with special needs. Having our own home base will provide much needed space for ongoing pastoral, diaconal and lay counseling, so that “the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:17

A new or renovated home base will also allow us to develop new initiatives as God might lead, such as Vacation Bible School, Faith & Finances classes, or English as a Second Language instruction, helping us to more effectively reach out to our neighbors and local community.

One of our goals is that every person and family is in a purposeful discipleship relationship. This includes accepting the call to know Christ, to make other Disciples of Christ, and to be in accountability relationships.

Our World

Since 2014, Crossroads has partnered with a Baptist church in Gera, Germany, and another inRostov-on- Don, Russia. This unique partnership serves the goal of promoting understanding between three very different cultures that were once World War IIenemies, all while demonstrating the reconciliation that comes through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Each year, a church takes its turn serving as the host for the three mission teams and organizing local mission projects.

Our faith in Christ has been enriched through these friendships and in learning to communicate (even via Google translate!) how we live out gospel truths in very different cultures.

“And let us consider how to stir one another up to love and good works.” – Hebrews 10:24

Our Neighbors

God has strategically placed Crossroads PCA in a community south of Washington, D.C. that is growing, influential, transient, and diverse.

Prince William County attracts people from all around the world and is one of the fastest growing counties in the state. People often move to this area for duty with the military, or for jobs with the federal government, government contractors, or many of the service industries. Crossroads welcomes many military families into our home base due to our proximity to the Pentagon, Marine Corps Base Quantico, and Fort Belvoir. Over 350 second lieutenants from The Basic School at Quantico have worshipped at Crossroads over the years. Crossroads is strategically placed to influence prominent members of the community and to train and equip those who continue to pass through. Indeed, more than 150 members and countless regular attenders who passed through “the crossroads of Northern Virginia” continue to serve in other churches around the world.

Almost two-thirds (64%) of Prince William County residents claim no faith affiliation. One of our goals is to continue to equip everyone to share their faith and focus on reaching others. Over the past 15 years, God has provided opportunities to partner with local nonprofit organizations. A new home base will better enable us to serve as “salt and light” to our neighbors.

Nothing Can Hinder God’s Work

Housing costs in the Washington, D.C. region are the 11th most expensive in the country. In Prince William County, the median price for space adequate for our ministries is $2 million -$5 million.

We currently have ~$300,000 on hand.

Therefore, we need to raise $510,000 ~ $1,200,000. Having this amount on hand will enable us to move more quickly when adequate space becomes available.

# of commitments $ amount of each Total amount

1 - 3 $100,000 $100,000 - $300,000

2 - 6 $50,000 $100,000 - $300,000
