Classroom News

Reading: Please refer to the Home Parent Letter and Focus Wall for “Penguin Chick” in your child’s LA section of their binder for details regarding this lesson’s reading and writing instruction focus. 

*Ask your child what main idea and details areand cause and effect.

Ask your child to give you examples of these skillsin the texts they read this week.

Science: Last week, your child and his/her partners investigated a mystery mixture to determine if it has any sand, clay, or humus in it. They will perform a rolling, smearing, and settling test on the mixture. All of the groups discovered that clay was one of the ingredients of their mystery mixture since they were able to roll it and the smear was an orange/brown color. The mixture in the test tube also took a long time to settle; another indicator proving clay was one of the ingredients. The cucumber seeds we planted in test tubes are busy growing. This week, the children will perform the last test on their soils called the draining test. They will observe which soil holds water, which soil can’t hold water, and which soil is the best to hold just enough water to be ideal for planting. On Wednesday, the children will revisit the terrarium with worms and record the changes they see in the compost and soil. Finally, on Friday there will be a Soils test. A study guide will be sent home Tuesday to help you guide your child when preparing for the test. 

Math: Please continue practicing counting coins at home with your child. Empty your coin purse or pocket and put a collection of coins on the table for your child to count in a random order. They should start counting the quarters, then dimes, then nickels, and finally the pennies. They’ll have fun counting with the real coins and they’ll get extra practice recognizing different coins as well. 

It’s National School Breakfast Week! Please consider joining your child for breakfast in our cafeteria on Tuesday, March 8th or Thursday, March 10thbetween 7:40-8:20AM. Students are encouraged to “wake up” their bodies and minds by eating a healthy breakfast. An adult breakfast is $2.25; a student breakfast is $1.75. 

The Animal Food and Supply Drive has been extended to this Friday, March 11th. 
