Classroom News

Reading: This week we will be reading “Pumpkin Fiesta”. This selection is a story. A story has characters, a setting, and a plot. We are discussing that the plot has a beginning, middle, and an end. The pictures in a story are important because they can help tell the story. This week our readingfocus skill is “predict outcomes.” We are discussing how we use what we learn at the beginning of a story to predict what will happen later on. Good readers make good guesses about what will happen later in a story to understand and enjoy what they read. This week our reading focus strategy is “self-correct.” We are discussing how good readers correct their mistakes when they say or read things that don’t sound right. Encourage your child to use this strategy whenever they stumble over a word, phrase, or concept. Encourage your child to explain how they knew they made a mistake, and the steps they took to correct it. Please practice these skills and strategies when you read at home with your child. 

Vocabulary words: vines, village, crown, crept, boasted

Miscellaneous: It’s running record time! In the next two weeks, your child will read a story to me and give a detailed retell. Your child will be scored on fluency and comprehension. Please continue to practice the five finger retell at home with your child. After reading a story, your child should be able to tell you the setting, characters, plot in sequence, problem, and solution. 
