PETER MILNER RIP: For those parishioners who remember Peter, a long serving Lay Clerk in our Choir, his funeral takes place at 1.30 pm on Friday this week at Morley St Paul, South Queen Street, LS27 0BD.

MONDAY LUNCHTIME EUCHARISTS IN THE CELTIC TRADITION: will feature during Lent and Holy Week – 12.05 pm at Leeds Minster, from 18February.

CALLING ALL PROSPECTIVE BELL-RINGERS! If you are interested in joining our very able team, details can be obtained from Jeff Ladd or from one of the clergy. A full training is provided.

LENT STUDY (in partnership with Oxford Place Methodist Mission): entitled The Faithful Community: Wednesdays 7.30 pm at Oxford Place from 20 February; Thursdays 1.30 pm at Leeds Minster from 21 February.

PANCAKES AND MUCH MORE BESIDE: Once again in 2013 there will be Traditional Pancake Races in the Southern Precincts of the Minster on Monday next week, 11 February (two days before Ash Wednesday) from approximately 1.45 pm.

RIDING LIGHTS – A DIFFERENT DRUM: Riding Lights return to Leeds on Tuesday this week, 12 February at 7.30pm (Pancake day) to present their wonderful play A different Drum. Inspiring stories of courage and sacrifice (including our own Woodbine Willie) are woven into the story of the plague village of Eyam. The stage is too large for the Minster building so the play takes place at St Peter's Primary School. Tickets (£10) are available from the clergy or directly from Riding Lights.

WOMEN BISHOPS – THE THEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES: The Church Times has just released a short paper summarising biblical and theological arguments both for and against women bishops. It is an excellent piece of writing that will help informed debate. Copies are available near the church entrance to read and study.

FOCUS ON: HOLY TRINITY CHURCH: This weekend Holy Trinity on Boar Lane will close!! But not forever, as the church will re-open in March with a new look!

Since the 1700’s, Holy Trinity has been serving its local community in a variety of ways – built to meet the needs of a growing population and to accommodate the overflow from Leeds Parish Church, it occupies a prime site in the city of Leeds. Boar Lane was the link road between the Manor of Leeds and the Borough of Leeds and was the road on which the rich merchants of Leeds lived.

Holy Trinity cost £4,563 to build, opening in 1726, and most of the pews at the time were sold or rented to private individuals.

Over the years the mission of the church has extended to serve the poor and homeless, to offer a varied musical tradition and to continue its rich worship to meet the spiritual needs of the congregation.

Both our parish and the Diocese realise the importance of maintaining Holy Trinity at the heart of the city and the new Trinity development; to that end, the refurbishment of the interior of the church is essential, allowing it to continue its spiritual role, with the advent of pioneer ministry in the city centre, and also to enable the Arts@Trinity initiative to flourish.

The pews will be taken out, giving an open and flexible space; the west doors will be the main entrance, making the church easily accessible to all those entering the new shopping precinct. The kitchen will be upgraded, so that the café can serve nourishing and wholesome food at a reasonable rate.

A new era has begun for Holy Trinity and it is clear that it will provide a quiet and welcoming space for spiritual reflection and worship, as well as playing its part in the arts offering for the city.An official re-dedication will take place in March – date to be announced.
