Centro and OnondagaCommunity CollegePartner for Students to Ride Free

SYRACUSE, NY – After a successful trial period last year, Centro and OnondagaCommunity College have announced a joint partnership that will continue to offer all registered students – full or part time – at OnondagaCommunity College free rides on Centro buses anywhere within OnondagaCounty, 24 hours per day, seven days per week for the 2009-10 academic year.

“We are delighted to partner with Centro to offer our students a sustainable and affordable option to travel to and from not only the College’s main campus on Onondaga Hill, but also to the North Site in Liverpool and to our many extension sites throughout the county,” said Onondaga Community College President Debbie L. Sydow, Ph.D.

“This program was extremely successful during the past year and we are thrilled OnondagaCommunity College will again support public transportation and the sustainability of our community,” said Centro Executive Director Frank Kobliski.

Every OnondagaCommunity College student is issued a Smart Card identification card which serves as their primary College ID. To take advantage of the program, students must go to the Smart Card issuing station in the GordonStudentCenter on the main campus and obtain a sticker that is valid for the fall semester through December 23, 2009. Spring semester stickers will be issued at the start of the spring semester in January 2010. The free ride program is not offered during the College’s winter break or during the winter session.

With more than 11,000 students, OnondagaCommunity College is the second-largest undergraduate institution in Central New York and was named one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the country by Community College Week. Founded in 1961, it is a comprehensive two-year college operating under the State University of New York (SUNY) and is locally sponsored by OnondagaCounty. Onondaga offers nearly 50 programs of study, bachelor and master’s degrees available on campus through a partnership with KeukaCollege, and more than 80 other transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities. Home to three-time NJCAA national champion men’s lacrosse and 2009 NJCAA women’s lacrosse teams, Onondaga has 11 intercollegiate men’s and women’s athletic teams.
