In an effort to bring awareness to children's specific needs and issues in Northern Nevada, The Children's Cabinet will host events in Elko (Saturday, September 24th), Carson City (Tuesday, September 27th), and in Reno (Saturday, October 1st). A variety of free activities and vendors will be available for kids and familiesin addition to games, raffle prizes and more. Education, health, and safety information will be available to parents and caregivers as well. These community events are made possible by a unique collaboration of youth-focused organizations including The Children’s Cabinet, NICRP, Children’s Advocacy Alliance, Every Child Matters, and Strong Start for Children.

“This is a terrific day for Nevada families to celebrate kids, have lots of fun together, and get valuable information on resources available to them,” said Lindy McDonald, Program Coordinator with The Children’s Cabinet. “We want to encourage parents and caregivers to spend this day with their kids, enjoy free family activities, and make the commitment to ‘Step Up for Kids’ on Children’s Day and throughout the year.”

Every year, Children’s Day events in Nevada build community and raise awareness for children and families, specifically on the importance of improving access to early care and learning programs, after-school programs, children’s safety and health care. In support of these efforts, State Senator Shirley Breeden on April 18, 2011 officially signed a proclamation designating the fourth Monday in September as “Children’s Day” in Nevada. The proclamation aims to recognize children in Nevada and encourage their individual talents and accomplishments. Additionally, the proclamation, which emphasizes that the needs of children should be given the highest priority, encourages Nevadans to unite in creating opportunities and programs for families.
