WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES: disABILITIES, HEALTHY AGING & INDEPENDENT LIVING EXPO 2009
October 6, 2010 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds Timonium, Maryland
Wednesday 9am-5:30pm
The World of Possibilities Expo in Maryland is increasing in popularity and rapidly becoming the Region’s major forum for disability-related resources. OVER 4000 attendees last May! The World of Possibilities Expo has SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! Serving: Children and adults with disabilities and their families and caregivers, senior community, baby-boomers, healthcare providers, educators and other service providers.
This Expo will provide an opportunity for thousands of attendees to explore a vast array of products and services such as: FREE WHEELCHAIR REPAIR, assistive and adaptive technology, durable medical equipment, computer software, mobility products, living aids and more all conveniently displayed to see, touch, and compare in a "one-stop shopping" experience. This will give individuals who do not typically have easy access to comparison-shopping a hands-on opportunity to try devices and speak directly to equipment representatives about the products, services and resources. And now, for more fun, entertainment and activities, we are contained within the highly attended Baltimore County Senior Expo and Baby Boomer Expo, open to all World of Possibilities attendees. Please visit http://www.caringcommunities.org for more information.
In 2004, the Center for Disease Control, Summary Health Statistics for the U.S. Health Population reported, “About 34 million persons were limited in their usual activities due to one or more chronic health conditions, and about 4 million persons required the help of another person with activities of daily living. About 6% of children received special education or early intervention services.” An estimated 685,000 people in Maryland have a disability, or 13.6% of the population age 5 and over. An estimated 127,000 people, or 2.5% of the population 5 and over, have difficulty performing self-care activities, also known as Activities of Daily Living, such as dressing, bathing, or getting around inside the home. “There is a tremendous need in this area of the country for an Expo such as this,” said Mona Freedman RN, Executive Director of Caring Communities, Inc. “This high profile event provides invaluable resources to people within the disability and senior communities who may not otherwise gain the information necessary for them to live their lives independently and self-sufficiently. We are proud to bring this event again to the Mid-Atlantic region.”
Mission Statement: To offer disability-related training, education, publications, and events for the benefit of children and adults with disabilities, their families and caregivers, as well as healthcare and education professionals. Our efforts will enhance the quality of life regardless of the nature or severity of the disability; empower individuals with disabilities to achieve economic self-sufficiency and independent living and; promote inclusion to enjoy full participation in society.”
