National Competition Rules
ARTICLE 1 - OBJECT
FEVIA, the Federation of the Food and Drink Industry in Belgium, organizesits National ECOTROPHELIA2012-2013 competitionaimed to student teams from establishments of scientific and/or commercial higher education, located in Belgium.The main goal of the competition is the creation and the implementation of a highly eco-innovative prototype food product.
The award is organized in two phases:
-A FEVIA award, called “ECOTROPHELIA Belgium2013”
-A European award, called “ECOTROPHELIAEurope 2013”
The present Competition Rules focus on the National Competition “ECOTROPHELIA Belgium 2013”.
A team of students will be rewarded for their achievement in the development of a prototype food product answering to the conditions stated below.Each team is invited to submit a dossier to FEVIA according to thepresentNational Competition Rules.
ARTICLE 2 – PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS
2.1The innovative prototype food product, object of the competition, must answer to all the following criteria:
- be fit forhuman consumption and aimed at consumers;
- be marketablein retail distribution or the restaurant and hotel sector;
- be innovativein one or several aspects compared to food products already on the market. This innovation can come especially from the concept, and/or technology, and/or recipe, and/or packaging…;
- take on board eco-innovation, which could mean the basic ingredients (origin, organic or with low carbon footprint) and/or packaging (recyclable) and/or manufacturing process (energy saving, water recycling) and/or distribution-logistics (new channels or direct consumer sales), making it easier for all businesses in the food production chain to integrate the environmental dimension .
- stand out for its taste, nutritional or other qualities;
- be reproducible for manufacturingin a production unit based on technical specifications (ingredients, manufacturing process, cost price, business investment…);
- conform to relevant regulations (processing, additives and ingredients, packaging, labelling, advertising standards, food safety…);
- be commercially relevant (suitablefor alocal and/ornational and/orEuropean market and meeting a demand, marketing plan, packaging, logistics…);
- showglobal coherencefor all the criteria set out above.
2.2 The prototype food product must be presented with an explanatory technical dossier with the following information, written in English:
- Description of the food product
- exact name;
- precise category (for example: savoury starters, desserts, ready-made meals, alcoholic drinks etc.…);
- composition;
- the product's taste and nutritional qualities;
- technical specifications;
- manufacturing process;
- packaging and shelf life.
- Description of the product's innovation and eco-innovative aspects
- Summary of the marketing, sales and business plan
- cost price calculation and price setting;
- consumer survey and competitor analysis;
- estimation of the potential market analysis;
- concept for marketing.
2.3Product description and written presentation in commercial language
A short product description must be written in 100 (one hundred) characters(including spaces andpunctuation), written both in national language and in English.
A written presentation ofthe project must be written in a commercial language. This text must contain a maximum of 1500 characters (including spacesand punctuation) with a title with the product's exact name. It will be used for media publications. And it is needed in both national language and in English.
2.4 The dossier has to be limited to 15(fifteen) pages (A4 format). Any potential appendices to this dossier are limitedto10 (ten) pages.
ARTICLE 3 - PARTICIPATION IN THE COMPETITION
3.1 The students can take part in the competition only as a team. A team will be composed of 2-10 students.
Any student team from the Belgian’s public or private institution of higher education in the scientific or commercial field can apply for the ECOTROPHELIA competition. A team can be composed of students from the same or from different institutions. As the dossiers imply technical as commercial expertise, we advise the teams to rely on multidisciplinary input.
In each case, the organization and the supervision of the team and the contacts with FEVIA are under the responsibility of the high school or university in which the students of the team are registered.
Each team must present a prototype food product and answer to the conditions stated in Article 2.
3.2 In order to take part in the competition, each student team will have to send an Expression of Interest with the following documents by Thursday November 15th 2012, 15.00h at latest to:

- amotivational letter signed by each member of the team;
- a presentation of the team (see Annex 1) with all the details of its members: name, surname, postal address, telephone numbers, e-mail addresswhere all information about the participation in the competition can be sent (please write e-mail addresses clear and in capitals);
- an individual engagement letter signed by each student of the team (see Annex 2).
Teams will receive confirmation of receipt within 5 daysafter receiving the expression of interest. Teams who did not receive the confirmation within 5 days, should inform FEVIA as soon as possible, otherwise they will be excluded.
3.3 For the final registration, the student teams must send following documents byThursday February 7th 2013, 15.00h at latest to FEVIA,43 Avenue des Arts, 1040 Brussels – to the attention of Mr Chris MORIS, Director at FEVIA, e-mail : . It must be sent by email and by post:
- the explanatory technical dossier as stated in Article 2.2 of the Competition Rules, written in English;
- thebrief product description and the written presentation of the project in commercial languageas stated in Article 2.3written in both national language and in English.
3.4 All the dossiers that will not reach the organization within the dates stated in Articles 3.2 and 3.3, or that will be considered incomplete or not in compliance with the present Competition Rules will not be taken into account by FEVIA.
Teams will receive confirmation of receipt within 5 days after receiving the dossier. Teams who did not receive the confirmation within 5 days, should inform FEVIAas soon as possible, otherwise they willbe excluded.
All participating teams will receive communication concerning the acceptance or exclusion of the dossier, within 10 days after receiving the dossier.
3.5 In any case the dossiers will not be given back to the partaking teams. FEVIAmay not claim any right of intellectual or industrial property on the dossiers or on the information therein contained.
ARTICLE 4- NATIONAL JURY and NATIONAL PRIZE
4.1 FEVIA will appoint a National Jury, whose members will be chosen for their notoriety, their independence and their competence.
4.2 Based on the criteria of the technical dossier (see Annex 3), the National Jury will proceed to the selection of the best dossiers and invite the corresponding teams to participate to the oral presentation.
4.3 Theteams will be invited to defend their dossier on Friday March 1th, 2013. The exact location will be communicated to the participating teams.
On this occasion, the National Jury will be in charge to choose, among the selected dossiers, the best two eco- innovative products, and among them the one that most answers to the criteria mentioned above.The typical questions of the jury have been added as a FAQ in Annex 5.
The partaking student teams will have 25 minutes in total. The National Jury will judge the oral presentation made in English by the students and the tasting of the products.
4.4 Each member of the National Jury will assign a score from 1 to 10 to each prototype food product in competition.See Annex 3for the evaluation grid of the jury, that will be used for the evaluation of both technical dossier as for the oral presentation. Information on the ecological aspects of the dossiers/projects has been added in Annex 4.
If two or more products obtain the same score, the National Jury will open a debate and then will proceed to a second voting.
4.5 Teachers can be present on the oral presentation but theycannotinterfere with the jury’s questions.
4.6The two bestwinning teams will receive an awardcalled “ECOTROPHELIA Belgium2012-2013”.First price is 1000 EUR and second is 500 EUR.
The National ECOTROPHELIA prize-giving will take place on the award ceremony/press conference that will beorganized in March-April 2013.
Moreover, the National Jury might assign some honorary distinctions to those prototype food products that have not won the competition but have been considered innovative in some of their features. The student teams that have received an honorary distinction can not use the award with commercial or advertising aims.
4.7 The decisions of the National Jury are confidential and unappealable.
4.8 Students are invited to present their product to all events where FEVIA is participating. FEVIA will organize full media coverage (with indications of the schools names and participating students).
ARTICLE 5 – PARTICIPATION TO ECOTROPHELIA EUROPE
5.1 The best winning team of ECOTROPHELIA Belgium 2013, engages itself to participate to ECOTROPHELIA Europe 2013which will be held in Parma (Italy) in October 2013.
5.2 FEVIA will introduce the dossier of the winning team to the European Jury c/o the Ecotrofood Project.
Articles 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6 ,5.7 , 5.8 and 5.9 are extracted from of the European Competition Rules 2012. These articles are only indicative. They are subject to changes. Please refer to the finalized and proper European Competition Rules that will be receivedlater.
5.3 The European Jury will be composed of representatives of the food industry and distribution industries, members of the European Commission, an industrial representative from the food industry, designated by each Participant and personalities closely related to food innovation.
5.4 The European judging panel will evaluate the oral presentation made by the students in English
and the gustatory qualities of the products.
5.5 During the selection each team will present their product in English, organize a tasting of the
product and answer questions from the judging panel.
5.6Each member of the judging panel will award a score for each project. The marks for each project
are determined by the average of the marks given to each project by the members of the judging
panel. The highest mark corresponds to the project, which the judging panel estimates to correspond
best to the criteria of the specifications. The three winning projects will be the three projects that
received the top three highest scores from the judging panel.
Prizes will be awarded in reverse order of scores. If two or more projects happen to receive the same
marks, it will follow that, after discussion of the aforementioned projects between the members of
the judging panel, a second mark will be given.
If the projects concerned receive the same marks again, the best project will be decided by drawing lots
5.7The three best winning teams will receive one European award : “Golden ECOTROPHELIA Europe” (8.000 EUR), “Silver ECOTROPHELIA Europe” (4.000 EUR) and “Bronze ECOTROPHELIA Europe” (2.000 EUR).
5.8 The ECOTROPHELIA EUROPE Organizing Committee will book and pay for participating students’accommodation at ECOTROPHELIA EUROPE up to maximum of3 (three) students per team, as per conditions set out by the ECOTROPHELIA EUROPE Organizing Committee. If students want to stay in accommodation other than the one booked by the ECOTROPHELIA EUROPE Organizing Committee, these students will have to pay for it themselves.
5.9 Each student team will be reimbursed for their travelling expenses, by keeping receipts, up to a maximum amount of 1200(one thousand two hundred) Euros per team, on the following conditions:
- in economy class, based on nominative standard tickets or the cheapest tickets possible (on handing over original documents);
- each "Team manager" will have to send, by post to the address mentioned below, a summary list of incurred expenses (and total amount requested) for their team’s travelling expenses and original supporting documents(tickets etc…);
- each team’s travelling expenses will be paid by bank transfer into each Team Manager’s bank account.
ARTICLE 6 - OTHER CONDITIONS
6.1FEVIA and ECOTROPHELIA Europehave the right to modify, defer or cancel the competition if necessary.
6.2 The participation in the competition implies automatically the full acceptance, by the students and by the school or University, of the conditions of this regulation.

ANNEX 2: Declaration of individual engagement
“I, undersigned,(name, surname, address of residence, place and date of birth), member of the student team (name of the team), enrolled at University or Institute (specify the name of the school):
- engage myself, not to introduce in the creation and the presentation of the dossier any reference likely to violate or prejudice the rights of a third party;
- engage myself, moreover, in case of win, to use the ECOTROPHELIA mark and logo in each occasion in which the product is promoted;
- authorize FEVIA from now on to publish my name and each picture taken during the prize-giving;
- declare to assign to the School or University I am registered in, the intellectual and industrial ownership of the prototype food product (without any limitation in space, time and applicability);
- declare moreover to have examined the National ECOTROPHELIA Competition Rules;
- fully accept the judgment and evaluation of the National Jury (See Article 4).
