Course Description

This course is designed for students who are interested in understanding the principles of nutrition and in maintaining a healthy life style. Attention will be given to the selection and preparation of food and nutrition and the role it plays in our health and well being.

Grading Policy

Grades will be determined by completion of assignments, successful food preparation and clean up, tests, quizzes, and participation. Most assignments will be graded as a unit. These unit packets are worth varying amounts of points depending on the unit.

All assignments or make-up assignments will be found on the course website on Canvas. Students will be expected to use this website to view presentations and complete assignments. Links to Canvas are found on the teacher website and under ‘Student Links’ on the NDJ website. The login is the students’ school email as the username and ID# or PIN# as the password. **Canvas=dsd.instructure.com

Paper copies of presentations are available in the classroom, as are the assignment questions if internet access is not available at home.

·  Absences: If a student is absent, the topic of what was covered each day and instructions for the assignment to complete are located on the calendar on the course website on Canvas.

If internet access is not available at home, students may use the internet at school or look in the binder in the classroom.

·  State Exam: There is a state exam at the end of this course. Proficiency of 80% or above on this exam and in performance of skills in class labs will result in a Skill Certificate for Food and Nutrition 1. This certificate can be useful when seeking employment or applying to other learning institutions.

The state exam is worth 20% of the final grade. Please encourage and help your student prepare for this test.

·  Late work: All assignments will be accepted until one week from the last day of each term, with late points removed from the total score. Grades for assignments not handed in by that time will be changed to “0”.

The following grading scale will be used:

94-100%= A 87-89%= B+ 77-79%= C+ 67-69%= D+

90-93%= A- 84-86%= B 74-76%= C 64-66%= D Below 60%= F

80-83%= B- 70-73%= C- 60-63%= D-

Citizenship

Each student will begin the term with an “S” citizenship grade. Citizenship will then change according to the student’s behavior, participation in the classroom, and by coming to class being prepared. Jobs, extra work, staying after school, etc., MAY be offered upon conference with the teacher and discussion of the student’s behavior in class.

Required Materials: These items will need to be brought to class everyday

·  Workbook: Students will be given a workbook containing all the notes, worksheets and assignments for the course. If a student loses their workbook, the student will be fined $3 for a replacement book

·  Pen or Pencil

·  Paper

Grocery Assessment:

In order to supply the ingredients for the cooking labs, students will need to pay $10.

Money must be paid to the office and the receipt given to the teacher by ______.

Classroom Expectations:

·  Come Prepared: Complete the appropriate homework and bring materials needed for

class

·  Show Respect: To yourself, other students, teachers, classroom and equipment

·  Safety: While using equipment or not, ALL have the right to feel safe

·  Have Fun! We can learn a lot if we communicate and work together

Cooking Lab Expectations:

We will have cooking labs often in this class. These are a fun and exciting learning opportunities, integrated into the curriculum of the course. However, I reserve the right to excuse lab privileges for a student if they do not follow lab rules. Safety and learning are my number one priority, and any behavior I deem inappropriate will result in loss of lab privileges

Tardies

When the bell rings students are expected to be in their seats ready to begin class. Students that are not in class when the bell rings must go to Mrs. Garza in room 131 to receive a tardy slip before they are admitted to class.

Hallpass

Students may be given 3 hallpass vouchers for each term. These passes would also be available for one free late assignment or extra credit at the end of the term.
