FOM Graduate Student Awards FAQ's

Q. What are the eligibility criteria for these awards?

A.The awards are availableto graduate students registered in Medicine or supervised by a faculty member with a primary appointment in the Faculty of Medicine. A student will qualify for consideration so long as they are registered before the awards are adjudicated. Students graduating in December 2009 are eligible for consideration; however, students who register in January 2010 will not be eligible as adjudication will occur prior to their registration.

Q.Are non-medical/medical students whose qualifications fit the criteria listed in the award applications eligible to apply for the Graduate Student Awards?

A.The Graduate Student awards are intended for graduate students (NOT medical students) in the Faculty of Medicine.

Q.Are students in the College for Interdisciplinary Studies (CFIS) eligible to apply?

A. Although CFIS is not part of the Faculty of Medicine; students in Genetics, Neuroscience, Interdisciplinary Oncology, Cell and Developmental BiologyAREeligible, as long as their supervisor is in Medicine.

  1. If an applicant is already the recipient of a major award, should they still apply for these awards?

A.Preference will be given to students who do not hold a major award. However, this being said, it is up to the student whether or not they should apply for these awards if they already have funding. As well, it is unlikely that they will be awarded a major scholarship (e.g., Babicki) if they already hold a major scholarship. They could, however, get a small scholarship.

Q.Can a supervisor be a sponsor?

  1. Yes, a sponsor can certainly (in fact, preferably) be a sponsor.

Q.Can a sponsor letter be submitted by a person who is not a UBC faculty member?

A.Yes.

Q.Is it permissible for both sponsors to be from an international institution?

A.Yes. (With regards to sponsor letters anything is acceptable as long as there are two (2) sponsor letters submitted. For example, a student can submit a joint letter from their supervisors and a letter from another sponsor.

Q.If I attended another institution before coming to UBC, do I need to include my transcripts from that institution in my application?

A.Yes. All post secondary transcripts should be included with your application.

Q.Can I have my transcripts sent directly to the address on the application form, or do they have to be handed in with the application?

A.Yes, you can have them sent directly to our office.

Q.Is it permissible to add extra pages to the application form?

A.Yes. If the space provided in a given section is inadequate for you to properly complete the application form you are permitted to add extra pages.

*The one exception to additions is the research project description which specifies that only one additional page in 12 point font may be added.

Q. Will I need to provide references when I produce the summary of my research project?

A. References are not required.

Q. Will just the job titles and dates be sufficient for the research experience section, or should I include a brief job description?

A.Just job titles would be fine, but if there is something about whatyou did that would be important forthe reviewers to know, that would be fine to include.

Q.What isthe selection criteria?

A.The selection criteria is based on academic and research achievements, research potential and the research project.

Q.I was awarded the Roman M. Babicki fellowship last year which stated that this award will provide support for 2 years. What do I need to do in order to get support for the following year?

A.To receive support for the 2nd year, you will need to re-apply to the Graduate Student Awards competition.

Q.Can my reference letters be submitted electronically?

A.Yes, provided they are in PDF format and are sent directly from the referee’s professional email address to
