March, 2016

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that the year has passed by as quickly as it has! The level of excellence that is consistently demonstrated by students and staff is truly inspiring – both Mr. Murphy and I feel very blessed to be a part of this wonderful community.

“Dream the impossible, seek the unknown, and achieve greatness.”

On the daily, the staff at Brookside work tirelessly to provide meaningful educational opportunities to all of our students. Most recently, some of our Intermediate classes went to visit the Design Exchange, where they were immersed in learning around Black History Month, as well as getting to experience all that the St. Lawrence Market has to offer. If you were to walk into classrooms on any given day, you would see students engaged in a variety of learning experiences; walking through the halls, you would find countless examples of student greatness.

With the March Break only a couple of weeks away, we are starting to shift into high gear for the final push toward the end of the school year. There are many exciting things that Bulldog Nation will get to experience over the last few months of school. We cannot wait to continue on this journey of learning together.

Sincerely,

Ms.HamidMr. Murphy

French Pizza Unit

Bonjour, Je m’appelle Natasha et je suis en 5ième année à la classe de Mme. Woodside

During the months of December and January, Mrs. Woodside’s, Mr. Lee’s, and Ms. Wood/Ms. Penman’s classes, have been working on a French pizza unit. During this time, we learned how to say and spell words such as pizza toppings, types of pizza, etc in French. My favourite pizza is la pizza simple. La pizza simple is la pâte (dough), le fromage (cheese), and la sauce tomate (tomato sauce). On Monday, February 8th and Tuesday, February 9th, all classes that were listed above made pizzas. On behalf of these three classes, we would like to thank Mme. Seaborn, monsieur Papa, our teachers for being flexible with the day schedule to accommodate us and all the parents’ volunteer that helped along the way.

Bon Appétit!

Hillside Field Trip

On Monday, January 25, 2016 my class, my teacher and I went to Hillside Conservation Centre because we are learning about Early Settlers and First Nations.

When we first arrived we saw so many animal furs and animals that had been alive but were now stuffed and on display. Then our Hillside guide showed us four sticks that would represent the things we were going to be learning. One stick had cotton on it, the next one had a maple leaf, a third had sumac berries and the last one had birch bark. We all made predictions about what they could mean.

Next we travelled to Lynde shores and fed chickadees out of our hands and skipped rocks in Lake Ontario. After that, we went back to Hillside and ate our lunch. We were given a little free time outside and we slid down this big hill. It was awesome!!!

Finally, we worked at three different activities. The first activity was making candles with real hot beeswax. I didn’t like the smell! The next was writing on Birch Bark with charcoal. The third activity was roasting Bannock over a fire and then dipping it in maple syrup. It was delicious! Then, we took the bus back to Brookside. It was the best trip ever!

We Create Change

This month, the Global Citizens will be ‘creating change’ with a fun activity - a jar guess! Students may view the jars in the front hallway display cabinet all month. Draw guess tickets will be sold in the foyer March 21-24. Guess how many items in the jar and you could win it! Make as many guesses as you like, just $1 each guess.

Tickets will be on sale at recess or after school. If your guess is the closest, you could win the jar! The winners will be announced and presented with their winning jar at the Assembly on Mar 31.

The money we raise in this event will go to our adopted village in Rural China, with the goal to help send children that don’t have access to an education to school. Help us create change this month!
