General Comment

Cumbria Pride in my mind was a great success on 1/10/2011; with information and sales stalls til mid afternoon. Then the music ramped up from 4pm. There was a good attendance as it was the first real LGBT pride event in Cumbria. Groups attended from the whole of the county. I met people that I had seen on holiday in Gran Canaria at the Pride there in May 2011.

The event was rounded off with the ‘after event’ being held at the Outrageous club in Carlisle. I hadn’t been there before but enjoyed the bar both inside and out where the walkthrough with the bar on the other side giving a excellent atmosphere.

The group are looking to be a part of an LGB party in Barrow on 16th December at Skint in Barrow. There will be a full package with special prices agreed with the overall management of the Majestic hotel. All three local groups: trans Lakes nights, Friends and Supporters of the LGBT Community and Furness and South Lakes LGBT Forum working together to make the evening work. All LGBT people and their friends are invited and we are hoping to get at least a hundred people attending. Tickets at £3.00. DJ disco and food.

As always watch your safety when out

Cumbrian corner – miscellaneous corner of items of interest unsuited for inclusion elsewhere

For those venturing out in south Cumbria the following are a few of the establishments where I have been comfortable and the management and staff have been welcoming. Common sense and the need to make the most of early times I suggest; especially if your size doesn’t help you to blend in.

Social and Restaurants

·  Abbey House Hotel, Barrow.

·  Duke of Edinburgh, Barrow for a drink and snack.

·  The Coot, Urswick, Cumbria for meals

·  The Rose and Crown, Ulverston for meals.

·  Linthwaite Grange, Windermere, for a classy restaurant meal. I flagged myself as ‘trans’ when booking. Views over lakes stunning for photo shoots. Not a cheap meal. But classy and value for money.

·  Majestic Hotel, Barrow good food and atmosphere

·  Farmers Arms, Ulverston town centre coffee in the morning

·  The Ship, restaurant [early evening during the week suggested], Roose, Barrow

Clothing and other necessities

·  BJ’s Unisex hair Salon, 229 Ainslie st, Barrow. Tel: 01229 822150. Hairdresser for wigs by appointment only. Beryl is super and gives advice re face shape, as not all we desire suits us. An NHS supplier so discretion assured.

·  Helen Daintree, 1 White Hart Yard, Market place, Ulverston, Cumbria, la12 7bb for waxing etc.

·  Studio 82, Scott st, Barrow; has other sizes than those on show plus bling and handbags. Visited 2 years ago.

·  Four Grove Resource Centre, 48-50 Suffolk St, Barrow for Rorys Youth Group, housing matters, police issues and every two weeks the Citizens Advice Bureau. Tuesday is LGBT day for support or as a drop in for a coffee and a chat. [my core times 10 until 2pm]

Alternative: Hairworks, 212 Dalton rd, Barrow, LA14 1PN also in the Market for wigs and wig accessories; wigs at an affordable price. I can’t comment on suitability but I have been told by an older trans that they are very accommodating worth a look; if you can give me further feedback please?

Holidays

Gran Canaria - Jackies Place: A great couple and will give prices that include, by negotiation if necessary, identifying suitable ‘trans’ friendly social venues for newcomers and experienced travellers alike.
