Special Projects:

The base boards in the 600 Building at Florence High School have all been replaced. This was due to the flooding that occurred last month. On-going projects with the SFB include the roof and AC replacement on the 100 Building at Florence High School and roof replacement on the gym; AC replacement on the boys locker room building at Florence High School. The Phase I main water line project at Poston Butte High School has been completed. The contractor sand blasted the inside of the 4” main line and lined it with epoxy.

Inmate Crew:

The inmate crew repaired the soccer goals at all K8 schools this past month and removed all the debris at Florence High and Poston Butte High Schools. The debris was trees limbs that had accumulated over time. They also modified some classrooms at Mountain Vista by turning four classrooms into two. Walls were removed to accommodate larger classes. Chairs and tables were moved from San Tan Heights to storage rooms in the warehouse building and the fence at Skyline was also repaired.

The Inmate Crew is assisting the Grounds Crew with on-going landscaping. A trailer was purchased to hold tools and lawn mower; inmates modified the trailer to secure tools and can now help with mowing, tree trimming and other landscaping projects as needed.

Grounds Crew is on-going.

Transportation Highlights

The Arizona Department of Public Safety conducted their annual inspection on our buses this last month. We are proud to report that all buses passedinspection! We had a few buses that needed some minor repairs and mechanics were able to make repairs while the officer inspected other buses.

Sgt. Steve Powers was the sole inspector; he inspected 81 buses in two days. Sgt. Powers has been with the Arizona Department of Public Safety for 19 years; inspecting buses for the past 5 years. He stated that the Florence Schools District mechanics do a great jobkeeping up with the maintenance on our buses. This is a great compliment to our mechanics. They look forward to the yearly inspections as this ensures they are completing their duties and making our school buses safe for our students. All buses now have the 2016 Arizona Department of Public Safety Inspection sticker.

The Safety/Training Coordinator, Brandan Caldwell, is still conducting bus evacuations at some schools. Mr. Cardwell presented two transportation employees,Kari Shartzer and Amber Stilson, with special gifts due to their outstanding performance at the San Tan Foothills bus evac. Both ladies greeted each student by first name and held more than one bus evac each; more than 120 students entered their buses. Their outstanding performance went above and beyond normal bus evacuations procedures. They were presented with gift cards, scratcher lottery tickets, and other items. Kudos to Kari and Amber for a job well done!

Discipline issues have subsided at some of the schools due to the implementation of the PBIS program. Not all drivers have been thoroughly trained on the program therefore some buses are still have a few disciplinary problems. Adam Leckie will be conducting another training exercise next month to review the PBIS program with our drivers and its importance to drivers. Some drivers have already started by issuing positive behavior tickets to students at some sites. On-going training will be conducted weekly with drivers from each school at the Transportation Bus Barns. Teaching drivers the importance of this program and understanding how it works will only help with discipline issues on the buses.
