FLOOR HOCKEY HANDOUT

History:

Floor hockey originally evolved as an adaptation of ice hockey and street hockey played inside in a gym on a wooden floor. The original floor hockey rules were adapted from National Hockey League rules.

A hockey goal is 6'long by 2'deep. A goal box is 4'x6' right in front of the goal. Any goal must be made from within the 3 point arch.

Sticks are made of plastic toes on a wooden stick. Any stick that goes above the waist either in front or behind a player is illegal.

Rules:

The object of the game is to hit the puck into the opponent's goal.

A team has 11 players 3 forwards and 2 wings on the front row that do all of the scoring. The wings main job is to bring the disc down the floor and center it to the forwards who shoot for goals. Each goal counts 1 point. The second row of players are the halfbacks. Their job is to keep the disc to the offense. The last line of defense is the fullbacks. And each team has a goalie. The goalie has privileges that no-one else has. He can use his whole body to stop the disc. He must have the stick in his hand at all times.

The game begins with a face-off– one player from each team tapping one another’s sticks three times before touch the puck. Play should be continuous and the players will be moving continuously. Players should play the disc not the players and keep all sticks below the waist.

  • When a puck goes out of bounds, the last team that contacted it loses possession.
  • If the disc goes out on the end line it automatically goes to the defense.
  • The disc must precede offensive players across the centerline
  • Sticks-- All sticks MUST be kept below the waist at all times
  • Once the goalie has the puck in his possession, a player from the opposing team may not attempt to hit or gain control of the puck.
  • Infractions of the rules result in a 2 minute penalty on the sideline
  • Interference and charging-- No Contact is allowed during the game at any time.
  • Elbowing, cross-checking and slashing,tripping, hooking,or rough play is a foul.
  • Sticks must be kept below the waist at all times.

  • A goal can be scored from inside the arch on the floor.
  • Goalies may not toss or throw the puck past half court.
  • Faceoffs begin with a player from each team tapping one another’s stick three times before touching the puck.
