Basic Course Overview
Throughout the school year, we will be following the Language Arts guidelines stated in the 2007 Alabama Course of Study (COS), the Alabama College and Career Ready (CCR) standards, and the Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE) standards. Our main literary focus will be early American texts with an emphasis on technical and nonfiction literature, including important United States documents. Written assignments will include narrative, fiction, expository, argumentative, and critical analysis pieces. Students will also be responsible for a bell-ringer journal which will include both writing prompts and grammar exercises. These will be turned in periodically and graded.Remember, this is an honors class. Students must come to class prepared and eager to participate in class discussions, group activities, etc.

- Marble composition book for bell-ringer activities
- Spiral notebook or binder
- Pocket folder with 3 prongs
- Index cards
Expectations
I expect each student to…
- come prepared for class every day.
- attend class regularly.
- ask for assignments and turn in previous assignments upon returning to class.
- bring all pens, pencils, textbooks, workbooks, notebooks, folders, and bell-ringer journals every day.
- begin the bell-ringer activity upon entering the classroom.
- ask questions and participate in class discussions daily.
- stay quiet and pay attention while others are speaking.
- do all homework exercises.
- work together in groups.
- follow all of the rules stated in the school and county Code of Conduct.
- never bring food or drink into the classroom.
- never plagiarize.
Required In-Class Reading
- Of Mice and Men, Lord of the Flies, Puddn’head Wilson, Julius Caesar, 1984, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Required Outside Novels
Students are required to read one outside novel per nine weeks and take a multiple choice test. Some of the novels on the outside reading list may be located in the school or local library. These novels may be purchased at stores such as Books-a-Million, Barnes and Noble, and even online at Amazon.com.
