  1. Purpose of the Grant

Top UpSuccessful grant applications to an external funding body (not affiliated with Flinders University) where there is a well justified need for some additional internal funding (top-up).

Funding period: July 2012 – December 2013

Closing date for applications:Friday 4 May 2012

  1. Eligibility
  • To be eligible for funding from the Faculty of Health Sciences, all ChiefInvestigators should be academic staff members of the Faculty or hold Full academic Status. If the Chief Investigator does not have any association with the Faculty of Health Sciences then they will only be considered for funding from the FMC Foundation.
  • PhD students cannot apply for funds as a Chief Investigator.
  • Requests for additional research student maintenance funds (RSM) (over and above the RSM allocation to each student) should be made as part of the supervisor’s application.
  • A researcher can only be Chief InvestigatorA (CIA) on one Research application (Top Up, Seeding or Near Miss or ECR). This includes applications where the supervisor is requesting additional funds for a postgraduate research student(s).
  • All Flinders University researchers listed on the original application as Chief Investigators must be listed on the Top Up application as Chief Investigators.
  • CIA on Topup or NearMissapplication must be CIA on the original grant.
  • Applications from groups of collaborating investigators are encouraged.
  • If you wish to extend the research described in an application beyond that in the originally grant then you should apply for a seeding grant not a topup.

  • Normally amount awarded will not exceed $20,000
  • Maintenance
  • Minor equipment
  • Project-related travel
  • Funding to bridge the salary amount awarded and the university salary cost
  • A contribution to a salary- (may not normally be used for cost shifting or backfilling of existing positions).
  • Grants will not be available to support teaching per se or assessment of teaching programs.

  1. Criteria for Assessment of Applications

These will include:-

  • Evidence of funding from the external agency
  • The strength and clarity of the justification for “top-up” funding.
  • How effectively funds allocated for grants in previous years for all CI’s have led to outcomes.
  • Strategic benefit of the research
  1. Attachments
  • The background, research plan and original budget of the external grant application (hard copy acceptable if no electronic version available)
  • Final letter with allocation of funding (hard copy acceptable if no electronic version available)
  • Publications and patents (last 5 years) excluding abstracts.
