Class purpose:

The purpose of this class is to provide a fun and engaging environment to learn more about music. I expect you to learn; all of the rules and guidelines here support that expectation. Enjoy!

  1. Daily expectations
  2. Attendance policy
  3. Be on time and have a pencil or pen and paper ready. Please do not use markers.
  4. Have your homework done, ready to turn in.
  5. Bring your notebook and iPad daily.
  6. Behavior
  7. I expect you to behave appropriately for a classroom setting. Use good sense when deciding how to react to others.
  8. Always pay attention.
  9. Always respect other students and teachers and their property.
  10. Whenever I consider your behavior out-of-order, I’ll give you a warning; if your behavior continues, you will have consequences. This may include extra work, detention, or a visit to the principal.
  11. The consequences for disrespect to others will always be severe.
  12. Gum, candy, food, drinks, etc.
  13. Don’t. This includes adding flavor to water.
  14. Water (unflavored) is permitted in containers with lids. Do not poke holes in the lid!
  15. General rules
  16. Desks --do not draw or write on them!
  17. Books--do not draw or write on or in them, either!
  18. You may be assigned a specific book.
  19. Textbooks will usually stay in the classroom.
  20. You will have to pay for any damage you cause to any book. Take good care of them.
  21. Talking in class
  22. If it’s your turn, speak up.
  23. If it is someone else’s turn, including mine, stay quiet and pay attention.
  24. Be prepared to listen to a lot of music!
  25. Grades
  26. Your semester grade will include the following categories:

  32. If you are late, you will lose points. When the tardy bell rings, you should already be seated in your seat.
  33. If you are absent, you will receive a zero.
  34. To earn all of your daily points, do these things:
  35. Have your homework done by the beginning of class (tardy bell), turn it in on time.
  36. Answer when I call on you.
  37. Raise your hand often to volunteer an appropriate answer.
  38. Pay attention all the time.
  39. Points will be taken away for failure to meet these expectations.
  40. If you are absent, your zero in participation for the day can be replaced if you complete an extra assignment. Ask for it when you come back to class.
  41. Notebook—You will need a binder or folder with brads, and some sort of tabs as dividers.
  42. Every quarter I will grade your notebook.
  43. As we progress through the semester you will learn more of what to put in your notebook.
  44. A neat and organized notebook will earn more points.
  45. Be sure to take notes during class and add them to your notebook.
  46. Tests and assessments
  47. This includes all daily quizzes and much more.
  48. You are required to attend one concert of MY choosing during the semester. This will count as a 100-point test grade.
  49. There will be several reports due throughout the semester.
  50. Always be prepared!

  52. If you struggle, let me know.
  53. I can arrange to give you personal time for coaching, just ask.
  54. I am usually available before and after school.
  55. If you are absent, see me when you return.
  56. Get new vocabulary words.
  57. Ask for make-up work.
  58. If you miss a test, schedule a time to take it.
  59. Bad test grade
  60. If you do poorly on a quiz or test, there’s help.
  61. You can retake any test, except the pre- and post-tests, if your grade is not what you wanted. We will discuss the procedures after Test 1. All make-up tests must be completed by the end of the quarter when the test is given.
  62. Daily quizzes will not be eligible to re-do.
  63. Other quizzes may be made-up, using procedures for test make-ups. Due dates for replacing these grades will be provided as the semester progresses.

  2. Cell phones and other electronic devices, including cameras, ipods, iPads, etc.:
  3. School policy: follow my rules. Leave it alone during class.
  4. If I see it, I will ask for it.
  5. If you refuse, you will be sent immediately to the office.
  6. iPads
  7. We will discuss appropriate iPad behaviors in a week or two.
  8. Cheating
  9. Cheating is wrong. Don’t do it.
  10. This includes sharing your answers or copying from someone else’s paper, whether on daily work, quizzes,or on tests.
  11. If you are assigned a report, DO NOT copy and paste text directly from a website. Plagiarizing is unethical and illegal, and will not be tolerated!
  12. Consequences for cheating will be severe, including but not limited to a zero on the assignment or test.
  13. Special tests and reports
  14. Pre-test at beginning of semester
  15. Post-test at end of semester, identical to pre-test
  16. Concert attendance: You are required to attend one complete concert given by the FKHS band and/or choir. More information will be given closer to concert dates.
  17. There will be one alternate opportunity, date to be announced. We will go to Bartlesville to see the Choral Society followed by dinner at a restaurant we agree on. Cost is about $25 per person, you pay your own way. Transportation will be provided.

Music Appreciation

Objectives of this class

Below is a partial list of objectives for Music Appreciation.

By the end of the semester, the student will be able to do each of the following unassisted with 80% accuracy:

While listening to music,

  • Recognize and reproduce the beat being played
  • Recognize and identify individual instruments played and/or qualities of voices singing
  • Recognize and identify tempo and rhythmic characteristics of each piece
  • Recognize and identify specific works by name and identify their composers
  • Recognize and identify certain musical styles and stylistic characteristics
  • Distinguish between the works of composers of differing styles when given a choice
  • Recognize and identify intervals by sound, from unison to octave

When viewing an unknown piece of printed music,

  • Recognize and identify intervals by sight, from unison to octave
  • Recognize and identify notes and rests: quarter, eighth, sixteenth, half, and whole, with and without dots
  • Identify the time value represented by each type of note, dotted or not
  • Recognize a familiar melody by sight, based on the direction and duration of notes given
  • Recognize and identify notes by letter name on both bass and treble clefs
  • Identify and interpret the time signature and key signature (up to three sharps or flats)

Given a list of musical terms and symbols,

  • Identify the English meaning for each term
  • Identify each symbol by name and describe its function

When attending a concert,

  • Listen attentively to each piece being performed and be able to meet all of the objectives listed above for “listening to music.”
