“Get Ready for Winter” is a national campaign being launched on 21st October 2014 across the country.
It provides a wealth of information for the general public about how you can prepare for the coming winter months, and when you start thinking about it there is just so much you can do:
· Fit flood resilient products to your home;
· If you are at risk of flooding, registering with the Environment Agency Floodline Warning Direct 0845 988 1188;
· Stay up to date with the weather forecast;
· Put some items in the boot of your car, such as a spade, blanket, torch;
· Follow advice on how best to keep you home warm during cold weather;
· Fit insulation to try and make your home more energy efficient, and retain the heat;
· Bulk order your heating oil with neighbours to keep the costs down;
· Dress appropriately for the conditions outside;
· Follow basic hygiene principles, “Catch it Bin it Kill it” to avoid catching or passing on colds and flu;
· Make sure your water pipes are lagged, to prevent burst pipes;
· That you have a torch and some supplies to help in the event of a power cut;
· If you have a garden, take some time to clear away lose articles that could blow around in string winds;
· Allow plenty of time for your journey if the weather is not so good;
