First United Methodist Church of Maiden October 2017

Homecoming 2017

Special thanks to all those who made our homecoming event a success. Our own, Charlie Curtis, did a great job with the message “Coming home to Holy Ground” during the morning worship service. There were approximately 90 folks that stayed for the covered dish luncheon. The food was delicious. You just can’t beat homecookin’ whenever it is available.

MYF Reunion

October 1st is another special day to remember old friends that were part of the MYF under the leadership of Dale and Betty Wilkinson and JD and Dot McCaslin. The former members were invited back to reminisce about old times and fellowship with a meal at Brookwood following the service with former member Rev. Ronnie Parker sharing the message during the worship service. Thanks to Butch Parker for organizing this special event and to those in attendance.

Pairs & Spares Book Study

The Sunday School group of Pairs and Spares invites anyone that would like to read and discuss with them “The Circle Maker, Praying Circles Around Your Biggest Dreams and Greatest Fears” by Mark Batterson. The book study will begin October 1st. Please see Greg and Debbie Richard for anyone that might be interested in joining the study to purchase one of the books from them.

Bible Study beginning October 9th

Pastor Tony will be conducting a bible study about the history of the bible. If you would be interested in joining in the study, please let him know.

UMM ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT

This year’s tournament will be held on October 21st at Glen Oaks beginning with lunch at noon and a shotgun start at 1:30.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for the tournament. Golfer registration is $50 per person or $200 per team of four.

For more information please contact Tim Lawing at 828-234-7543, Anthony Lawing at 828-320-4796 or Ryan Coulter at 828-244-9064.

Sanctuary Facelift

Special thanks to an anonymous donor for their generosity in purchasing new carpet for the sanctuary. Many folks seem to think that it has been since 1960 that the “red” carpet has been in the sanctuary.

Special appreciation goes to Jay Bolick and volunteers in selecting the new color. Jay also has been responsible for removing the old steam radiators and repairing the walls beneath the windows. The pews have been professionally cleaned and now we await the installation of the carpet. This may mean that we meet one Sunday for worship in the fellowship hall.

Once again, we appreciate all the hard work and financial support for this project.

Shut-in for this month:

Annual Fall Festival plans are being discussed. Please let Elaine Lawing or Katie Lawing know what you can assist with. Ideas of having this year’s festival on Sunday, October 29th following worship service with a hot dog luncheon might be a possibility…OR do you prefer a Saturday night? Could there be a corn hole tournament in addition to games for everyone???? It takes help from more than two folks, so let’s see what you are wanting and willing to do.
