Dear Students:
This documents is called a DLQ and you should get one of these every two weeks or so. A DLQ is usually worth a minimum of 200 points, but often more. For this first DLQ, I have included some extra information about the first semester so you can plan ahead. There can be changes due to new requirements and team planning, but for the most part, it will not change. Do not fall behind. You can always work ahead, but don’t get frustrated if you have to go back and fix an assignment that may contain errors or needs to be revised. This DLQ will contain more vocabulary and procedural instructions than usual. I will also use this DLQ and its activities and assignments as an assessment of your basic language skills. Do your best, and for the most part, do your own work, so I will know how to group you and what specific skills I need to work on with you.
First Quarter Overview: Theme- conflict and fear
Literature Text: Cinderella (various versions compared in handouts that will be available online for a limited time) and creation stories from different cultures (the world on the turtles back-pg 24-32, the man to send rain clouds-pg 48-54, the way to rainy mountain-pg 55-63, and Biblical creation-Bible Genesis).
Informational Text: Family counseling information, psychology documents, science based documents on how world functions/ecology
Speaking and Listening: Resolving conflict- learning how to listen and speak. (Speech: Introductory Speech and How should we treat each other? Social contract discussion topic)
Writing: We will be focusing on persuasive and expository writing during the first quarter. Our writing topics will be connected to our theme. We will write a proficiency persuasive essay and a letter of advice to Cinderella’s family using information from story and counseling documents, and compare/contrast creation myths natives to other creation stories and how creates conflict. Other writing skills covered are revision vs. editing, style, essay standard procedures, impromptu writing, peer revision, self-editing/editing marks, and various writing activities that help with planning and structure of writing.
Language: eight parts of speech review/ subject and predicates/ clauses and phrases/ capitalization, GUM pages 1-72. Vocabulary from the texts (Literary Text Vocabulary from various stories), Informational Text Vocabulary (DLQ, Parent Link, Turnitin.com, core standards, levels of questioning, SQ3R and subjective/objective), and literary terms (narrative, dialogue, characterization, setting, inference, conflict, plot, protagonist, antagonist, expository, pathos, turning point, resolution, summarization, and paraphrase) The Cinderella effect is a term used by psychologists to describe the high incidence of stepchildren being physically abused, emotionally abused, sexually abused, neglected, murdered, or otherwise mistreated at the hands of their stepparents at significantly higher rates than at the hands of their genetic parents. It takes its name from the fairy tale character Cinderella, who in the story was cruelly mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters.

Information Treasure Hunt Activity: (50 points)
Each week you will receive a document in this class called a DLQ. The D stands for ______, the L stands for______, and the Q stands for ______. That is the process of true learning. In every class, on every day, during every minute you should be able to articulate (say) what activity you are doing, what is the purpose(s) of that given activity, and your mind should be forming higher-level questions connected to the objectives of the lesson. At the onset of a new unit, I usually provide a fill-in-the-blank note section like this one on the DLQ that outlines the basic information you will need to complete and understand each objective. Each activity in the DLQ has a purpose and is worth points. Generally, the DLQ is worth at least ______points, but often it is worth more. For example, this note section is worth ______points. Each blank you leave unanswered will cost you points, as will incorrect responses. The DLQ acts like a weekly quiz. In fact, be sure to save ALL DLQs in your class notebook because ALL questions on exams come from the DLQ.
The “nature” of this course: By state and national standards English 11th is intended to meet all core objectives of the junior year of high school in language arts. This class will cover components of American Literature, historical documents, research, analysis, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, mechanics, informational texts, and much more. It is a writing intensive course which means, if you will not write, you will not pass. The assignments in this class are ______; our ______for this first unit is “Fear and Conflict.” A ______helps build continuity between ideas or concepts. Unlike other English classes you may have had in the past, this course is intended to give you the ESSENTIALS SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE you will need to be properly prepared for your future whether that means attending college or beginning a career. I have an easy-going nature, but do NOT misinterpret my good nature with being lax. I am a highly disciplined and structured teacher with 27 years of classroom teaching experience. A good learning environment needs to be a safe learning environment. Negative or derogatory behavior toward teacher or students will not be tolerated. If you behave appropriately, you will never be “kicked out” of class, but if you don’t achieve to the expected academic level of this class, you will receive an “F” on your report card.
