First Parish Church Cohasset is searching for a part time Religious Educator (12 hours / 3 units per week) Salary: $14,400 (September to June). Anticipated start date of October 31.
The DRECreates and teaches Sunday morning religious education program for children ages K-6 with a paid assistant from mid-September to mid-June, 3 Sundays per month.Provides monthly children’s message in worship and meets with minister regularly for supervision.Works in conjunction with Religious Education Committee to ensure coverage for days off and acts a consultant to the committee for events and program beyond the classroom.
Duties include:
- Research, submit for approval, secure and plan yearly R.E. curriculum appropriate for multi-age group of children in grades K-5.
- Teach 3 regular Sundays per month as specified by Religious Educator per availability.
- Work with R.E. Committee to coordinate coverage for remaining Sundays.
- Post calendar for sign-up in classroom.
- Communicate with volunteers regarding dates to ensure classroom coverage.
- Train and inform volunteers of current classroom routines, curricula and other relevant information to ensure continuity.
- Maintain classroom(s) in an orderly, neat and age appropriate fashion according to the current Montessori-style philosophy of the SpiritPlay program.
- Secure and maintain classroom supplies and materials.
- Care for, use and make as necessary, SpiritPlay stories.
- Meet with RE Committee quarterly or monthly at Committee’s request to report on classroom curricula, progress etc.
- Attend weekly staff meeting.
- Act as consultant to R.E. Committee as necessary for programs planning beyond the scope of the Sunday morning education program for children in grades K-5.
- Act as consultant to R.E. Committee as necessary for programs planning beyond the scope of the Sunday morning education program for children in grades 6-8.
- In conjunction with the R.E. Committee monitor the Religious Education budget.
- Submit receipts for all expenses incurred by the program.
- Keep track of program registration and weekly attendance and maintain R.E. files.
- Provide annual report of such to congregation.
- Welcome new families to the Sunday morning classroom and orient them to the program and its routines.
- Communicate religious education content via weekly and monthly church newsletters.
- Supervise paid Sunday RE Assistant in conjunction with RE Committee.
- RE Committee part of hiring and decision making process with regard to this position.
- Coordinator responsible for day-to-day communication and supervision of this position.
- Supervises paid Sunday Childcare Provider in conjunction with RE Committee.
- RE Committee part of hiring and decision making process with regard to this position.
- DRE responsible for day-to-day communication and supervision of this position and works in conjunction with RE Committee to generate substitutes and volunteers to cover this classroom.
- Provides a bridge between children and worship by providing a children’s message once monthly during the worship service.

- Keeps abreast of current best practices and available programs in the world of religious education. Attends training, professional development and collegial relations relevant to the job of a UU religious educator.
