First Grade Virginia Standards of Learning

Reading, Language, Writing:

1.1-The student will continue to demonstrate growth in the use of oral language.

1.2-The student will expand understanding and use of word meanings.

1.3-The student will adapt or change oral language to fit the situation.

1.4-The student will orally identify, produce, and manipulative various units of speech sounds within words.

1.5-The student will apply knowledge of how print is organized and read.

1.6-The student will apply phonetic principles to read and spell.

1.7-The student will use semantic clues and syntax to expand vocabulary when reading.

1.8-The student will expand vocabulary.

1.9-The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of fictional texts.

1.10-The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of nonfiction texts.

1.11-The student will use simple reference materials.

1.12- The student will print legibly.

1.13-The student will write to communicate ideas for a variety of purposes.

1.14-The student will use available technology for reading and writing.

Math:

1.1- The student will count and write numbers between 0 and 110, count backwards from 30 by 1’s, and count by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 110.

1.2- The student will group a collection of objects into tens and ones and write the corresponding numeral.

1.3- The student will indicate the ordinal position of objects, first through tenth.

1.4- The student will represent and name fractions for halves and fourths.

1.5- The student will select a reasonable order of magnitude from three different quantities.

1.6- The student will create and solve story and picture problems involving one-step solutions, using basic addition and subtraction facts.

1.7- The student will describe part-part-whole relationships for numbers to 10 and demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction to 10.

1.8- The student will determine the value of like coins (pennies, nickels, and dimes).

1.9- The student will tell time to hour and half hour and read a calendar.

1.10- The student will use nonstandard units to measure and compare length, weight, and volume.

1.11- The student will identify and describe plane figures (triangles, squares, circles, and rectangles).

1.12- The student will collect and organize data and read and interpret data in a graph.

1.13- The student will sort and classify concrete objects according to one or more attributes.

1.14- The student will identify, describe, extend, create and transfer growing and repeating patterns.

1.15- The student will demonstrate an understanding of equality through the use of the equal symbol.

Science:

1.1- The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning logic and the nature of science by planning and conducting investigations.

1.2- The student will investigate and understand that moving objects exhibit different kinds of motion.

1.3- The student will investigate and understand how different common materials interact with water.

1.4- The student will investigate and understand that plants have basic life needs and functional parts and can be classified according to certain characteristics.

1.5- The student will investigate and understand that animals, including humans, have basic (life) needs and certain distinguishing characteristics.

1.6- The student will investigate and understand the basic relationships between the sun and the Earth.

1.7- The student will investigate and understand weather and seasonal changes.

1.8- The student will investigate and understand that natural resources are limited.

Social Studies:

1.1- The student will demonstrate skills for historical thinking, geographical analysis, economic decision making, and responsible citizenship.

1.2- The student will demonstrate knowledge of Virginia history by describing important events and people in the history of the Commonwealth, including Jamestown, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and life in Virginia today.

1.3- The student will describe the stories of influential people in the history of Virginia and their contributions to our Commonwealth, with emphasis on Powhatan; Pocahontas; Christopher Newport; Maggie L. Walker; and Arthur R. Ashe, Jr.

1.4- The student will describe the lives of people associated with major holidays, including George Washington Day (Presidents’ Day); Independence Day (Fourth of July); and Martin Luther King, Jr., Day.

1.5- The student will develop map skills.

1.6- The student will develop a geographic understanding that the location of Virginia determines its climate and results in four distinct seasons; and the landforms of Virginia affect the places people live.

1.7- The student will explain the difference between goods and services and describe how people are consumers and producers of goods and services.

1.8- The student will explain that people make choices because they cannot have everything they want.

1.9- The student will recognize that people save money for the future to purchase goods and services.

1.10- The student will apply the traits of a good citizen.

1.11- The student will recognize the symbols and traditional practices that honor and foster patriotism in the United States by demonstrating respect for the American flag by learning about the Pledge of Allegiance.

1.12- The student will recognize the symbols and traditional practices that honor the Commonwealth of Virginia.

1.13- The student will understand that the people of Virginia have state and local government officials who are elected by voters; make contributions to their communities; and include people who have diverse ethnic origins, customs, and traditions and are united as Americans by common principles.
