First Day of School Procedures 2012 – 2013

TEACHERS SHOULD BE OUTSIDE THEIR DOORS SUPERVISING AND ASSISTING STUDENTS IN FINDING THEIR HOMEROOM CLASSES.

*We will run a modified bell schedule with two homerooms.

Once in Homeroom:

  1. Give each student an agenda. Write their name and team name with permanent marker legibly on the front cover.Let them know that they are responsible for the agenda and must carry it at all times (including lunch). No defacing (stickers, blacking out letters, etc.) the agenda. Replacement agendas will cost $5.
  2. The only stickers allowed - Put student ID barcode and lunch number stickers on the first paper page of the agenda near the bottom.
  3. Ensure students know how they are getting home. Have student write their mode of transportation or bus number on the inside cover of their agenda. (If they do not know their bus number,tell them to find out during lunch as bus routes will be posted in the cafeteria. Ask them again when they return for the 2nd homeroom of the day.)
  4. Have each student complete the front cover of the Code of conduct.Have all students complete the first page (i) of the Code of Conduct. Ensure that their name and grade level is on the top of the form (legibly) and that they have signed the bottom. Have them detach it and turn it in to you. Please alphabetize these forms and turn them in to the administrator who comes to your room during the “freeze" count.
  5. Give students their schedules.

***CHECK EACH STUDENT’S SCHEDULE FOR SIX DIFFERENT CLASSES! If a student is in homeroom and does not have a schedule, send him/her to the guidance office on their respective floor (1st floor - 6th, 2nd floor – 7th grade, and 3rd floor - 8th grade).

  1. Explain the bell schedule and lunch schedule to students.
  2. When an announcement is made to “freeze” please keep students where they are until announcement is made to “unfreeze”. An administrator will stop by each homeroom to take an accurate count, pick up theCode of Conduct pages and any leftover student schedules.
  3. Begin to go over school rules and procedures in the agenda (pp. 3-9). As time permits you should then review the information in the Code of Student Conduct. Use PPT if available. Be sure to cover the Bus Conduct Rules in the Code of Conduct. (pages 7-8).
  4. ****Do not allow students to take the Code of Conducts with them.

Throughout the rest of the day all teachers should:

1. / Check roll sheets and take attendance.
2. / Discuss the fire evacuation routes with each class.
3. / Review the school rules and procedures in the agenda (pp. 3-9) and go over any classroom expectations andprocedures.

Between 5th and 6th period students will return briefly to Homeroom (via an announcement):

  1. Instruct students to take the Code of Conduct home to have students and parents complete page iii.The student should be instructed to bring the entire Code of Conduct back.
  1. Pass outand explain paperwork that the student is to take home for the day. (If you need any additional forms you can get them from the front office.)

  1. Explain theprocedure for issuing lockers. Students thatturn in all completed paperwork first will be eligible to receive a top locker. Use a lottery method for cases where there are not enough top locker to issue to students that are eligible
  1. If there is time remaining, continue to cover the Code of Conduct.

For the rest of the week in Homeroom…

Continue to read the code of conduct and review school rules in the agenda.

As forms are returned, collect, check for completeness, alphabetize, separate, and send to the discipline office. Use a log to keep a record of the returned forms. Keep the log in order to determine who is eligible to receive a top locker.

***All 6th Period Teachers

  1. Ensure every student has their mode of transportation or bus number written permanently on the inside of their agenda cover. Document this information for you to use at dismissal time for the rest of the school year. You are to ensure students leave your class for dismissal when they are supposed to.

2. All 6th period teachers are to read the following to their 6th period students every day for the first week of school.

In order to ensure the safety of our campus we are staggering the dismissal of students. Car riders, walkers, bus riders and extra-curricular activities will be released only when called on the announcements.

l. Leave the classroom only when your mode of transportation or bus number has been called.

2.Once you have been released from your 6th period class you are to move quickly (do not run) to your lockers and then the designated area. Do not “hang out” in the hallways.

3. If you are a car rider wait in the designated area. Pay attention and watch for your ride. Wait until all vehicles have stopped before you approach your car. Stay off the yellow safety zone until you load.

4. If you are a walker go to the south side (Magnolia Street) of campus and exit between buildings 1 and 2. Wait to cross the street untilthe teacher assists you. Once you are off campus you are to remain off campus until the following school day.

5. If you are a bus rider enter the bus loop with haste. Check the board to see where your bus is located. Get on your assigned bus immediately and stay there until the bus departs. The bus will leave 5 minutes after the bus numbers has been called on the intercom.

6. If you are in an extra-curricular activity wait in your 6th period class until extra-curriculars are called. Once called, move with haste to the location where your activity is being held.

If you fail to meet any of these expectations, you will receive consequences.

Any teacher who does not have a 6th period should report to his/her active supervision station 5 minutes prior to dismissal.
