First Apislavia International Honey and Beekeeping Competition

The international honey and beekeeping competition will be organized within the framework of the Apislavia 2010 Congress. The competition will be a public event open to all beekeepers and honey packers from Apislavia member countries.

Categories

1)Extracted honey:

a)multifloral honey – nectar honey. Floral honey can be harvested from various plants blooming at the same time. The electrical conductivity of honey should be <0.8mS/cm.

b)honeydew honey. Honey can be harvested from various plants producing honeydew at the same time. The electrical conductivity of honey should be >0.8mS/cm.

c)unifloral honey (f.e. acacia, chestnut, rape, lime, fir, spruce honey) must display typical characteristics of the individual type of honey.

2)Other honey presentations. Includes chunk honey, cut comb and section comb honey.

3)Honey cakes and bakery products.

4)Bee products combinations and combinations with other foods. Includes honey with royal jelly, propolis, pollen, nuts, fruits,flavored honeys, sweets, candies etc.

5)Honey drinks.

a)Honey spirit or liqueur.

b)Mead

i)Metheglin: Honeywine made with any herbs or spices.

ii)Traditional: Honeywine from a mixed variety of honeys, no fruits, herbs or spices added.

iii)Other mead: Honeywine made with grape or fruit juice and other specialities.

c)Other honey based drinks, including non-alcoholic drinks, honey beers etc.

6)Apitherapy products and cosmetic based on bee products.

7)Gift basket or various products displays and innovative packaging.

8)Beeswaxcandle and beeswax art.

9)Innovation for beehives or linked to the bee products production.

10)Photographs of the bee, other pollinators and apiaries.

11)Books and journals linked to the beekeeping world.

12)Multimedia. Websites, videos, CDs linked to the beekeeping world.

General information and rules

Samples in various categories will be accepted at the Apiexpo 2010 venue - the Palace of Culture and Sports, Varna city, Bulgaria at3. September 2010 from 9:00 to 12:00 a.m. Special desk for this purpose will be prepared near the entrance marked as “Honey Competition”. The sensory assessment will take place on 3. and 4. September 2010. The official publication of results will take place during the Award ceremony at the 4. September 2010 at 17:00 o´clock.

Entry fee for each entry is 25 EUR or equivalent in BGN (Bulgarian lev)which must be paid to the organizers during the registration process at the 3rd September 2010 and must be accompanied with protocol of analyses in category 1, as well as with application form, which can be preferably send to the organizers in advance. Registration form is attached at the end of this letter.

In each category 3 prizes will be awarded – gold, silver and bronze medal. If less than 3 entries will be subscribed into one category, only one medal will be awarded. Exhibitor must be also producers / authors of each entry. Only categories from 6 to 12 are open also for commercial companies, organizations and non-beekeepers.

The jury and sensory panels will be made from minimum 3 members. Every member state can delegate 1 member in each category. One person can be member of jury for several categories. Those entering their products and other entries for the competition cannot be members of the jury in this category.Every member state will delegate person to the jury and will send the name of the person to the address untill 15th of August 2010. The decisions of the jury are final and not open to appeal.

The organizers reserves the right to carry out a subsequent analysis for establishing the conformity of the required physical and chemical parameters as well as presence of residues of chemicals not allowed within EC countries. If the results of such an analysis should indicate any deviations from the required levels, the sample can be stripped of its previously awarded recognition.

Participation in the contest entails the candidate's approval of the rules and regulations herein as well as any decisions taken by the jury. Entries could be given back to the applicants in the 4th September between 18:00 and 20:00, otherwise remain the property of the organizers without compensation.

Conditions of participation

Category 1 – Extracted honeys
The honey must have been harvested between 21 August 2009 and 20August 2010. Pasteurisation and ultrafiltration of honey are not allowed. Any residues of antibiotics, sulfonamidesor prohibited pesticides are not allowed and will be eliminated from the competition.The honey sample must be sent to an accredited ISO 17 025 or state laboratory of your choice. Laboratory test report in any Slavic language or English, as well as application fee should be brought directly together with sample to the application desk at the 3rd September in the morning. Laboratory test report must report water content, electrical conductivity, HMF, saccharose anddiastase content of the entry.
The honey entered in the competition must meet the following physical and chemical parameters:

  • Water content in honey – maximum 18%.
  • HMF per kg of honey - maximum 20 mg.
  • saccharose (sucrose) per 100 g of honey – maximum 5 g.
  • diastase – minimum 8 grades of Schade scale

The honey must be packed in at least 450g glasses. Two glasses of honey are needed, one honey sample will remain in original packaging and will be displayed for the public (this sample is equipped with an appropriate declaration, including information on type of honey, producer and country of origin), the second sample is anonymous, without etiquette and will be coded for sensory testing.

Category 2 – Other honey presentations

Chunk honey - an entry of chunk honey is two jars. The chunk of comb must be in one piece. The cuts should be clean and uniform. The chunk of comb should fill fifty percent of the volume of the jar, the other fifty percent being honey.

Cut comb - an entry of cut comb honey is two boxes. These must be boxes made for displaying cut comb and may be either square or round, and must be transparent on all sides.

Section comb honey in the frames - an entry of section comb honey is two boxes in a cellophane bag.

Section comb honey entries are not judged for flavor. Some of the judging criteria are uniformity of appearance and color, cleanliness, absence of uncapped cells, freedom from granulation and pollen, uniform weight of each section, and total weight of the entire entry.

Category 3 – Honey cakes and bakery products

Entries will be judged for taste, general appearance and culinary arts. All recipes must content honey and have weight between 200 and 3000 grams.

Category 4 – Bee products combinations and combinations with other foods

Two jars of other packaging are needed. General appearance, originality, quality and availability of components will be judged alongside with taste or other sensory analyses.

Category 5 – Honey drinks

Min. 33% volume of alcohol for spirit, min. 16% alcohol for liquor and min. 9.5% of alcohol for mead is required.The beverage should be equipped with an appropriate declaration. The declaration must include the following information: type of honey-based beverage, producer, content and lot of the batch. Taste, clarity, bouquet, color and bottle will be judged.

You must submit 2 samples of the meador other honey beverage from the same batch for each entered sample. The mead must be packed at least in 500ml bottles, other drinks at least in 250 ml bottles.

Category 6 - Apitherapy products and cosmetic based on bee products

Originality, innovation, quality of components, general appearance and marketing outlook will be judged.

Category 7 - Gift basket or various products displays and innovative packaging

Originality, innovation, quality of components, general appearance, and ability of transport will be judged.

Category 8–Beeswax candle and beeswax art

Two candles, eventually one piece of beeswax art is required. Wax is judged based on cleanliness, uniformity of appearance and shape, color, aroma, and absence of defects such as cracks and shrinkage.One of the candles in each entry will be burned.In candles and art design overall appearance, originality and quality of wax will be judged.

Category 9 - Innovation for beehives or linked to the bee products production

Innovation category includes honey houses for innovation in materials, methods and ideas linked to honey production, as well as hives. The innovation concerned must be presented by the author using an note, illustrated using diagrams and photographs (if possible, digital, for projection). The above-mentioned note must be A4 format, be titled using the name of the innovation, specify the research goal and results, the completion technique and/or the method, the advantages, the drawbacks or residual problems: financial, technical, and commercial.

Category 10 – Photographs

Photographs of the bees, beekeepers and apiaries can be displayed without a frame. Each participant may enter maximum 5 photographs to be exhibited during the Apislavia event. The photograph may be colour or black and white. Photograph will be presented in a standard 10 x 15 centimetres landscape or portrait format.

Category 11 – Books and journals

This competition includes books and other publications (letters, journals or magazines) linked to the world of beekeeping. Entries will be judged according to: clarity of information, understanding and adaptation of the support to readers, visual attractiveness, layout, creativity and graphical rhythm.

Category 12 – Multimedia

Entries must exclusively concern bees and subjects directly related to the world of beekeeping. Categories are websites, videos and CDs. Entries will be judged according to: clarity of information, understanding, suitability of the support to readers, visualattractiveness, layout, creativity and originality.
