FIRST AID AT WORK POLICY 2015

NIDDERDALE HIGH SCHOOL

  1. General Statement

Itisourpolicytoensurethatappropriatefirstaidarrangementsareinplaceforstudents, staff and anyvisitorstoourpremises. Thisincludesprovidingsufficientlytrainedemployeesforour businessneedsandmaintaininganadequatesupplyoffirstaidequipment.

Italsoinvolvesprovidingenoughinformationtostafftoenablefirstaidassistancetobesought duringnormalworkinghours.Whereworkisregularlyundertakenoutsidethesehours,then adequatefirstaidcoverwillbeprovided.

  1. The Legal Position

OurdutytoprovidefirstaidatworkisgovernedbytheHealth and Safety (FirstAid) Regulations1981.Theserequireustocarryoutariskassessmentinordertodeterminewhat firstaidfacilitiesandpersonnelarenecessarytomeettheneedsofourbusiness.

Wearealsorequiredtoreviewthisassessmentperiodicallytoensurethatcurrentprovisionis adequate.InordertocomplywiththeseRegulations,ourassessment hasconsidereda numberoffactors,includingthefollowing:

•Sizeofthebusiness

•Typeofbusiness

•Buildinglayout

•Pasthistoryofaccidents

•Proximityofbusinesslocationtoemergencymedicalservices

•Needsoftravellingand/or loneworkers

•Firstaidcoverintimesofsicknessorannualleave

  1. Responsibilities of First Aid Personnel

Inordertocarryouttheirdutieseffectively,firstaidpersonnelhavethefollowingdutiesand responsibilities.

First-aidersareresponsiblefor:

•Respondingpromptlytoallrequestsforassistance

•Summoningfurtherhelpifnecessary

•Lookingafterthecasualtyuntilrecoveryhastakenplaceorfurthermedicalassistance hasarrived

•Reportingdetailsofanytreatmentprovided:

  • Ensuring any First Aid is reported in the First Aid Log
  • Ensuring any accidents are reported to the Site Manager

The Site Manager is responsible for:

  • Stocking the First Aid kits
  • Holding accurate records in the Accident Book
  1. Procedures

Thefollowingaregeneralfirstaidrelatedprocedurestobe followedbyallstaff:

•If you are aware that any student, member of staff or visitor has been taken ill, or has had an accident, refer to Reception for assistance. Reception staff will call a qualified first aider to render assistance. You should not attempt to give first aid treatment yourself.

•Reception staff will call an ambulance where necessary

•A member of staff will usually accompany the sick or injured to hospital and remain until a family member, parent or guardian attends. If this is not practically possible, parental permission will be sought for the student to travel without a member of staff.

• In cases of emergency, nominated staff may use their private car to transport a casualty to hospital with the agreement of the Headteacher.

•Ifaccess to afirstaidkitis required for personaluse,the kit must not be removed from its designated place.

•Anylossordamagetofirstaidequipmentmust bereportedtothe Site Manager.

•Ifafirstaidkit ispoorlystocked,thisshouldbereportedto the Site Manager.

  1. Dealing with Visitors

Itisourpolicytoofferfirstaidassistancetovisitorstoourpremises.Shouldavisitorfeelunwell or haveanaccident,then the employeesupervisingtheirvisitshouldcallReception for afirst-aider. Ifthevisitorhashadanaccident, the first aider is responsiblefor ensuring thatanentryismadeintheaccidentbook held by the Site Manager.

  1. Staff Training

Allstaffundertakingfirstaiddutieswillbegivenfulltraininginaccordancewithcurrent legalrequirements.ThismeansthatanyFirstAideratWorkwillattendanapprovedHealthSafetyExecutivethree-day(18hrs)courseandanyEmergencyFirstAideratWorkwillattend abasicone-day(6hrs)course.

  1. Information for Employees

Weacknowledgethatfirstaidarrangementswillonlyoperateefficientlywheretheyare understood,bothbyemployeesandotherswhomaybeworkingonourpremises.These includepart-timeandtemporarystaff.Forthisreason,informationonhowtosummonfirstaid isprovidedforallstaffinourstaffhandbook and current first-aiders are listed onthe staffnoticeboard outside the Headteacher’s office.

Firstaidboxescanbefoundinthefollowingareas: Reception, First Aid Room, Site Manager’s Office, Rooms 16, 17 and18.
