Prompted Questions:

  • What events or initiatives has your campus provided to students, faculty, and staff to end gender-based violence?
  • PSU Hazleton – Stand for State, Green Dot 1st step. Launched this in January. 3rd Thursdays – talk about bystander intervention. Find frequently traveled spaces for activities or passives for folks to encounter.
  • Workshops also available. Need more faculty buy-in a work-in-progress.
  • Hunting Ground viewing, stream videos.
  • Awareness ribbon with ourselves (teal ribbon with shirts). Kick this off on Monday.
  • Tough Guise 2
  • Denim Day – tie dye and denim --- case abroad, driving instructor assaulted, victim’s jeans too tight as a reason for assault, appeal overturned (Italy)
  • The Blame Game – victim blaming event
  • Rutgers, New Brunswick – 150 year anniversary Revolution to End Sexual Violence!
  • We usually focus on victims, but important to educate potential perpetrators
  • Vagina Monologues
  • Denim Day
  • Social Action Theatre/SCREAM Theatre – scenarios related to assault and interrupting it, improv group for education (sometimes target athletes)
  • No More campaign
  • PSU University Park
  • Walk A Mile in Her Shoes
  • Tough Guise 2
  • Pursuit of Truth – adult survivors
  • What departments or organizations assist with these events or initiatives?
  • Rutgers, New Brunswick – Office for Violence Prevention and Victim Assistance, No More campaign (individual student-driven) and signage!
  • PSU Hazleton – no student orgs assisting, most of the programs facilitated by staff within Student Affairs. Want to make changes, not easy!
  • PSU University Park – Residence Life, Student Affairs, Women’s Resource Center (off-campus organization). Center for Women’s Resource – Men Against Violence event
  • How has Residence Life been a partner with these events or with changing policies/procedures for survivors?
  • PSU Hazleton – Res Life OWNS it! Intentional with only 3 to manage everything. Consent, Bystander Intervention, multiple genders rep in programming, can only do so much. Passive as well as active. Using social media, emails, advertisements (not just flyers). SA Conduct
  • Rutgers – VPVA and Residence Life, training and advocates (24/7). Advocates can go to residence halls in the moment, collaborations between residence halls and VPVA events (Vagina Monologues). RAs are a part of the planning.
  • PSU University Park – mandated training for staff, helps people recognize signs of assault, avenues for reporting, employee assistance program w/ resources to family members as well, assault in and out of the University family
  • Could you give a brief description for how you support survivors when called/contacted (Res Life, police, counseling, student conduct, Title IX, other responses)?
  • PSU Hazleton – respond in person (accuracy), provide support but not always for reporting, make sure we are a resource, supervisors informed. Internal reporting system – can exclude name of the survivor, protect privacy. Give list of resources to survivors.
  • Rutgers – very strict system, contact police required, EMS may need to respond for medical assistance, push back from victims who don’t want to report. 24/7 advocates can respond and assist when going to the hospital, counseling is another resource to talk to afterward. When Residence Life hears from someone, they are encouraged to report directly. If they go to counseling, it can be kept confidential.
  • PSU University Park – not as familiar, anonymous line to report. Turn it over to a Residence Life staff. Very similar protocol to Hazleton – supporting the student, not a strict process. SHARE website – reporting and resources.
  • Given Title IX adjustments, SAV Act, VAWA, and other legislation, how has your staff trained on these changes and how has it impacted your University overall?
  • PSU Hazleton – from Kutztown to PSU, more emphasis on Title IX w/in conduct, really involved as Res Life staff. Penn State system – role hasn’t changed much, has always been first line for these situations. Always trying to support students! Much more training and talking about Title IX, and Clery…
  • Rutgers – trained every year, at least 1 per year for staff, anyone in Student Affairs to be Title IX deputy or trainer, assess climate regularly. VPVA sessions regularly provided.
  • How have students or peer mediators been involved in ending gender-based violence?
  • Rutgers – 24/7 advocates, SCREAM theatre (very popular) --- national tours! Recruit students for this theatre project. Curtis will share a contact for us!
  • No More campaign from a male students
  • Fraternity and male athlete conversations
  • PSU Hazleton – aside from staff, SGA board, RAs, it’s hard to get student buy-in. Small campus – students spread very thin. Many students WANT to be involved, but may not be able to.
  • How do you move from a risk reduction model to a bystander intervention model for addressing gender-based violence?
  • Rutgers – Bystander Intervention training for ALL students
  • PSU Hazelton – sexual assault and safety and made them separate conversations
  • Safety still emphasized, but not together
  • Defining consent!!!
  • PSU University Park – pictures of male students supporting sexual assault awareness week. Group ‘Men Against Violence’ that assists with this as well.
