Vertical Ventilation

Abutment
Point of contact between two objects.

Arduous
Demanding great labor; difficult.

Ascend
To go or move upward.

Bearing Walls
Wall that supports itself and the weight of the roof and/or other structural components above it.

Cockloft
A concealed and often unfinished space between the ceiling of the top floor and the roof of a building.

Composite
Made of certain compounds. ie-shingles.

Compression
Vertical or horizontal forces that tend to press things together.

Corrugated
Shaped into folds or parallel and alternating ridges and grooves.

Deflect
To cause an object to turn aside or deviate.

Delaminate
To split into thin layers.

Egress
An exit, as in path.

Elapse
To slip or pass by as in time.

Escalation
An increase or intensification.

Exothermic
Releasing heat.

Felt
Tar-impregnated paper used as an base for roof coverings.

Gusset Plate
Wooden or pronged metal device used in place of nails to bind roof or floor components into a load-bearing unit.

Imminent
About to occur; impending.

Imperative
An obligation or duty; a must.

Impingement
To move upon as in flame.

Infer
To lead to a conclusion. Synonymous with Terminate.

Inherent
An essential characteristic; intrinsic quality.

Integrity
State of condition. ie-Structural.

Intersect
To cut across or through.

Interstitial
Relating to small narrow spaces between objects.

Interval
Amount of time between two specific events.

Inverted
Inside out or upside down.

Laminated
Composed of layers bonded together.

Mercantile
Relating to merchants as in businesses.

Mitered
The edge of a piece of material beveled so that it fits into a joint or slide.

Obstruction
An object or situation that delays progress.

Parapet Walls
Walls of varying heights that separate roofs of adjoining buildings or adjacent portions of a building.

Pertinent
Having a logical relevance to the situation at hand.

Prefabricated
Manufactured in advance as in buildings or homes.

Prone
Lying with the front or face downward.

Read
To observe important features of a roof or structural component from a point of safety in order to assess the component's condition.

Shake
Roof covering formed by splitting rectangular pieces from large blocks of wood.

Shard
A fragment of a brittle substance such as glass.

Shingle
Roof covering formed from composition material.

Simulate
An imitation or substitute for another similar object.

Sound
To test the structural integrity of a roof or floor by striking the surface of the assembly with the blunt end of a hand tool.

Stability
Resistant to change.

Susceptible
Easily influenced or affected.

Tension
Vertical or horizontal stresses that tend to pull things apart.

Terminate
To bring to an end. Synonymous with Infer.

Void
Containing no matter; empty.

Wieldy
Easily managed.
