Joint Sealant

1.01

All joints must be prepared, and primed if required, in accordance with the manufacturer’s current technical data sheet.

1.02

Preparation

The joint surfaces must be thoroughly dry and clean. Remove all laitance, curing compounds, form release agents, loose materials and any contaminating foreign matter from joint faces. Remove all rust, scale and protective lacquers from metal surfaces.

In moving joints, the sealant must not be allowed to bond to the back face of the joint. Prevention of 3 sided adhesions, is achieved by installing either a polyethylene bond breaker tape, or placing / pressure fitting a closed cell, polyethylene backing rod or filler board into the joint to support the internal back of the sealant.

New concrete must be allowed to cure for a minimum of 28 days before sealant installation.

All materials used in conjunction with the new sealant system, shall be approved by the sealant manufacturer.

1.03

Primer

The use of primers is generally not required on correctly prepared surfaces. On excessively porous surfaces, adhesion can be improved by diluting a small quantity of Flamex One, 1:1 with water and brushing this into the joint sides.

Sealant

3.01

The Sealant is to be 4 hour fire rated, non-slump, waterborne, acrylic material that forms a flexible, strong bond to most common building materials. It is intended for use in relatively low movement joints and is not suitable for water-ponded or submerged conditions.

The sealant is to be used in joints from 6mm up to 30mm wide. The depth of the sealant should be half the width with a minimum depth of 12mm. The width of the joint must be designed so that the sealant’s maximum movement accommodation of +/- 10% is not exceeded.

The sealant shall exhibit the following properties:

Movement accommodation factor: / +/- 10% (total 20%)
Typical hardness: / 25 typically / Shore A (ISO 868)
Application temperature: / 5oC to 50oC
Skinning time: / 20 minutes @ 25oC, 50% RH
Cure rate: / Approx. 1m per day @23oC, 50% RH
