Fire Alarm Procedure

On hearing the fire alarm/ smoke detectors staff must follow the procedure below:

  • Exit by the closest and safest route.
  • DO NOT collect any personal items or put on any shoes or coats
  • Take register and emergency contact details
  • Escort visitors to the correct exit and stay with group.
  • Check points:

Relative safety: 11 Hayes Road, next door, blue garages.

Absolute safety: 1 Hayes Road, St Marks church.

  • Whoever heads out first group of children. Stays by pavement and ushers children away from road and down alley way.

Room leaders take charge of room evacuation.

Room name / Procedure for relative safety.
Baby room /
  • Wait for other staff to assist in evacuation of babies.
  • Never carry more than 2 babies
  • Room leader to check area and close doors.

Toddler room /
  • Assist less able children
  • Room leader to check area and close doors

Pre school /
  • Access of staircase for a safe exit
  • Assemble children near gate.
  • Lead calmly down stairs and exit front door
  • Room leader to check rooms and close doors

Staff room and office /
  • Access of staircase for a safe exit
  • Take nursery mobile
  • Close all doors
  • Spare staff to assist rooms where required
  • Take signing in sheet from hallway.

Kitchen /
  • Turn off all appliances
  • Assist with the evacuation of the children from the ground floor.

Call 999

Fire evacuation procedure once outside building

Procedure / Responsible
Managers to keep nursery key on them at all times and to have the nursery phone available as well. / Managers
Manager to delegate responsibility to staff. / Manager
Children lined up against the garage walls. Staff to keep children safe. Register call of staff and children must be taken. / Manager
One staff member to investigate building if not known the cause of the alarm. Call 999 if in any doubt. / Manager
Manager to assess whether to stay in relative safety or move to absolute safety site. / Manager
In the real event of a fire the manager to make arrangements to ensure children are kept safe. And arrange phone calls to be made to parents to collect. / Manager
If first aid needed trained first aider to deal with situation and call for an ambulance if needed. Following first aid policy and procedure. / Manager
No one is to return to the nursery until the manager has had the all clear. / Manager

Evacuation practice procedure

Fire drill to be practiced 6 weekly / Manager
Fire drills to be recorded in the log. Detailing time to evacuate, number of staff and children, who took lead. And any comments of risks that arose. And procedure changed accordingly. / Manager
Fire equipment to be check regularly as per instruction. Including all electrical equipment to be PAT tested. / Manager
Daily risk assessments are carried out to ensure fire exits clear, alarms working etc. / All staff
