SECTION 321991 - FINE GRADING

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMNTS

  1. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2 SUMMARY

  1. Provide all labor, materials, necessary equipment and services to complete the Fine Grading work, as indicated on the drawings, as specified herein or both, except as for items specifically indicated as “NIC ITEMS”.
  2. Related work specified elsewhere:
  3. Division 32 Section “Topsoil Placement”.
  4. Division 32 Section “Seeded Lawns”.
  5. Division 32 Section “Sodded Lawns”
  6. Division 32 Section “Tree, Plants and Ground Covers”.

1.3 SITE INSPECTION:

  1. The Contractor shall visit the site and acquaint himself with all existing conditions. The Contractor shall be responsible for his own subsurface investigations, as necessary, to satisfy requirements of this Section. All subsurface investigations shall be performed only under time schedules and arrangements approved in advance by the Landscape Architect or Owner’s Representative.

1.4 EXISTING CONTOURS:

  1. Drawings show proposed final grading.
  2. Major demolition, site preparation and general site earthwork will be accomplished under another, earlier contract. Verify that contours and grades established under that Contract are grades shown on grading plans. Make whatever corrections and/or repairs necessary to make finish grades consistent with the requirements of the grading drawings and specifications.

1.5 UTILITIES:

  1. Before starting site operations verify that the earlier Contractors have disconnected all temporary utilities which might interfere with the fine grading work.
  2. Locate all existing, active utility lines traversing the site and determine the requirements for their protection. Preserve in operation condition all active utilities adjacent to or transgressing the site that are designated to remain.
  3. Observe rules and regulations governing respective utilities in working under requirements of this section. Adequately protect utilities from damage. Record location of active utilities.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Adhere to requirements of all applicable building codes and other public agencies having jurisdiction upon the work.
  2. Primary emphasis should be given to the aesthetic appearance and functioning of berming and swales, as directed by the Landscape Architect or Owner’s Representative. The Contractor shall employ skilled personnel and any necessary equipment to insure that finish grading is smooth, aesthetically pleasing, drains well and is ideal for receiving sod and plant materials.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 TOPSOIL:

  1. Contractor to prepare, haul and spread existing topsoil from onsite topsoil for fine grading operations. Provide fresh screened topsoil, 6” compacted depth, in lawn and landscape areas. All processing to meet specifications is the responsibility of the landscape contractor.
  2. Planting bed areas - see Planting Details.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 JOB CONDITIONS:

  1. Dust Control: use all means necessary to prevent dust from construction operations from being a nuisance to adjacent property owners and from damaging finish surfaces on walks, paving, etc. Methods used for dust control are subject to approval by the Landscape Architect or Owner’s Representative.
  2. Burning: On-site burning will not be permitted.
  3. Protection: use all means necessary to protect curbs, gutters, sprinklers, utilities and vegetation designated to remain, and in the event of damage, immediately make all repairs, replacements and dressings to damaged plants necessary to the approval of the Landscape Architect. Contractor shall incur all cost for the replacement of damaged objects and vegetation.

3.2 SCHEDULING

  1. Schedule all work in a careful manner with all necessary consideration for adjoining property owners and the public.
  2. Coordinate schedule with other Contractors to avoid conflicts with their work.

3.3 GRADING:

  1. Contractor shall establish finished grades as shown on the Drawing (s) and as directed by the Landscape Architect, including areas where the existing grade has been disturbed by other work.
  2. Finished grading shall be smooth, aesthetically pleasing, drain well and ready to receive sod and other plant material to full satisfaction of the Owner’s Representative and Landscape Architect.

3.4 CORRECTION OF GRADE:

  1. Bring to required grade levels areas where settlement, erosion or other grade changes occur. Adjust grades as required to carry drainage away from buildings and to prevent ponding around the buildings, on pavements and in lawn areas.
  2. Remove all rock or objectionable material larger than 1” any direction prior to commencing landscaping.
  3. Contractor shall be responsible for stabilizing grades by approved methods prior to landscaping, and shall be responsible for correction of grades as mentioned above, and clean-up of any washouts or erosion.
