I. COURSE PLANNING
The Ross School of Business recently changed the Core starting with the Class of 2006. The new schedule gives MBA1s the opportunity to take a couple electives during the Fall term, assuming they take advantage of the "turbo" finance offered in Fall A (which we recommend).
Probably the two best electives to have under your belt for January interviews are FIN 615 and FIN 580. FIN 615, Valuation, is one of the most popular courses at Ross, and is particularly relevant to corporate finance, research, and investment banking internships. FIN 580, Options & Futures, is growing in importance as option theory gains wider acceptance in the corporate world; it's especially recommended for students pursuing sales and trading internships.

II. CAREER PREPARATION
After arriving in Ann Arbor, it's good to begin refining your understanding of what different jobs are like. What makes investment banking different from investment management? How does the corporate finance role differ from industry to industry, and even firm to firm? The sooner you can focus on what type of job you're interested in, the better.
The best resources for this process are all the people in the business school community. Talk to your classmates, who come from a wide variety of fields. Talk to returning MBA2s, who have their summer internship experience fresh in memory. Talk to the career counselors and OCD staff.
Lastly, we urge you to join the Finance Club and to get involved very early. Most Finance Club members agree that the Finance Club is an essential organization for those interested in pursuing a career in finance.
