Your final project for The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian will be a multi-genre project and will allow you to focus on a number of creative outlets such as the use of illustrations, poetry, life lessons and personal lists.Your grade for this assignment will deeply reflect the amount of time and effort you put into each part of your project.

Cover Page: Either draw or generate a picture of an empty liquor bottle. Inside the bottle, include words and phrases that describe how Arnold’s life is affected by alcoholism.

Capture a Scene: Draw a picture to go along with a scene from the book that wasn’t illustrated. Why did you choose to represent this scene visually? What makes this scene significant in the story? Make sure your response is at least one paragraph.

Greater Human Truths: Find three greater human truths that appear in the book. On page 129 Junior says, “If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing.” What Junior says is a greater human truth, because this idea tells a truth about life. Write your greater human truths and include page numbers. Remember to include quotation marks. Under each greater human truth, write a paragraph explanation about why you chose that particular idea, includingone examplefrom life which reflectseach.

Friendship: Write a poem that reflects the friendship you share with one other person. Your poem should capture the importance of the friendship and the emotions which are shared as well. Your poem must be a minimum of ten lines. You cannot include only one word for every line.

Joys in Life: Arnold says, “And I kept trying to find the pieces of joy in my life. That’s the only way I managed to make it through all of the death and change” (176). Arnold makes a list on pages 176-178 of people and things that give him joy in his life. Create 4lists which depict the people, music, food and one other of your choice that give you joy. You must include between five and ten examples under each category. You may include graphics if you wish.

Two Worlds: On page 57 Arnold perceives himself as two people. Think about your own two worlds. Illustrate yourself. On one side of your picture, describe yourself as a freshman. On the other side of your picture, choose another role you take on in your life. Write phrases and adjectives on each side on your illustration to describe your two worlds.

Your final project in due on Wednesday, November 5thand is worth 140 points. You must use either construction paper or white computer paper for the sections which include drawings, no notebook paper. You must hand in your project in either a clean pocketed folder or a project folder with a clear cover. We will not accept your project if it is not bound together. Therefore, do not try to staple it together or hand us a bunch of loose papers. Make sure each part is in the order that it appears on these directions. Include this direction sheet as the last page; it will also serve as the rubric. No rubric, no grade. When you come into class on Wednesday, your project must be complete, in order and ready to hand in. You will not be given class time to put your project together. You may either type or neatly write for this project. You mustuse color in your personal illustrations.
