Final messages from the seven projects

Feedbackand learning echoed previously reported themes, with further examples of impact on students’ sports participation, volunteering and wider outcomes, and updates on effective delivery which included:

  • A learn to swim programme – benefits: developing a skill, making friends, gaining confidence and improving wellbeing (University of Bedfordshire) – Students at Bristol University also said that joining sports clubs had built their confidence and the project believes that reducing isolation is a factor in retention
  • Working alongside the student counselling service to engage students in sports activities has helped students who were suffering from anxiety and related mental wellbeing issues, and struggling to settle in, to cope with university life (Leeds Beckett University)
  • External funding secured for a dedicated disability sports hub following successful integrated wheelchair basketball sessions (University of Bedfordshire)
  • New data collection systems enabling more sophisticated monitoring and tracking of students’ participation in university sport (Bristol University and University of Warwick).
  • The main focus of the University of Huddersfield’s programme is going to be women’s sports participation, linking to the This Girl Can campaign
  • A ‘pathway’with opportunities to progress from pay and play level to Varsity level, underpinned by the four levels of: Social Sport; Instructional Courses; Social Clubs; Intramural Leagues. The next step is then to offer Development teams, catering for students who don’t make Varsity teams through trials, with the aim of qualifying for their chosen sports Varsity squad in the following September/October.The new Social Clubs strand features women’s football, water sports (covering six different sports), badminton, tennis, handball, cycling, netball and running (Bournemouth University)
