Final AP Project

Instructions

The AP Biology course will culminate with three comprehensive projects that will showcase all of the skills and content that you have acquired throughout the course of this year. Below are brief descriptions of 7 projects. Your task is to choose 3 of these seven projects to complete. You may complete them in any order, but the instructor must be notified in advance which project you will be submitting at each due date:

First Project submission: Due 6/1/11

Second Project Submission: Due 6/8/11

Third Project Submission: Due 6/15/11

For each project, you must notify the instructor on the prior Monday as to which of the seven projects you will be submitting.

Projects

1)  Foods Project

You or your group will choose a dish (entre or desert that consists of at least 5 ingredients). You will create a presentation describing the agriculture of the ingredients, chemistry of cooking methods, and human physiology of the nutritional elements. You will cook and serve your dish to the class while presenting your research to the class. *See accompanying handout

2)  Biology Activity Book

You will produce an activity book that introduces or reviews a complex biological topic (photosynthesis, respiration, protein synthesis, mitosis, etc.). This activity book will be used to aid struggling 1st year biology students with these difficult topics. Your grade will be based on how well your activity book helps these students pass a test on the topic.

3)  Music Video

You will create a music video that introduces a complex biological concept to an audience. You will be graded primarily on the completeness of your content, but also on production values, choreography, costumes, etc. *See accompanying handout.

4)  Wetlands Research

You will research the ecology and history of the Meadowlands Wetlands in New Jersey. You will produce a research paper describing the ecological importance, characteristics, and development of the Meadowlands. You will also give a brief presentation of the concepts in your research paper. *See accompanying handout.

5)  Virus Project

You will research a human pathogenic virus. You will produce a Poster describing the life cycle and characteristics of the virus, a model of the virus, and a presentation describing the characteristics, pathology, and treatment for the viruses and disease caused by the virus. See accompanying handout.

6)  Comparative Anatomy Lab Report

During class we will be dissecting a variety of organisms. You will use the information obtained during these dissections to write a lab report comparing the anatomy and physiology of vertebrates. See accompanying handout.

7)  Alternative Project

If you have an idea for a project that has not been assigned already, you may present it to your instructor for consideration. Be creative. The only requirement is that it must be complex enough to showcase both skills that have been acquired during this course as well as detailed content.
