NIIFF 2013: APRIL 25-28

INTRODUCTION

The focus of this year's Nepal International Indigenous Film Festival (NIIFF) 2013 is 'Equal Access and Participation of Indigenous Peoples in Media'. So does, the slogan explicitly reflects the exclusion, injustice, and discrimination faced by the Indigenous Peoples for century, it is a call to combat those grievance and advocate for equal share in the resources and equal right to participate in all forms of non-indigenous media without any discrimination. It is also a call to preserve their cultures, languages, spirituality and traditions alive anddevelop own indigenous media to reflect indigenous values and fight against myths and misconceptions. It is a stride to forge a global solidarity and equally to challenge the existing mainstream media, all sorts of prejudices and injustice through the use of powerful media tools likecommunity radio and television to feature films and documentaries, from video art and newspapers to the internet and social media in order to foster the mutual understanding, create a bridge, and establish truly an intercultural society.

It is hoped that the collection of films on mentioned theme will contribute significantly to information about the effect, impact and changes in community, nation and indigenous world by media and through media.

The festivals have helped to promote not only films but also an understanding and appreciation of indigenous issues, skills, knowledge and practices. Exchange of films between different indigenous groups at the festival extensions have nurtured a sense of pride and helped to advocate socio cultural rights.

CRITERIA

Films meeting the following criteria will be eligible for the entry.

  1. Films made after January, 2009 with completed film entry form.
  1. The subjects and storyline of the film should be centered on theme and should portray positive message about theme.

OR

Films made by either indigenous or non indigenous filmmakers will be accepted for the festival but subject should be centered on indigenous issues, knowledge, wisdom, good practices and culture. Or, the films possessing indigenous content will be accepted for the festival.

SUBMISSION

  1. Submission to the Festival is open to all kinds of films: Shorts or feature films, music videos, animation or documentaries of any length.
  2. There is no entry fee to submit a film for the festival.
  3. Films submitted to IFA without filling out the entry form will not be accepted.
  4. Films submitted to earlier edition of NIIFF will not be considered.
  5. Any submission received after the submission deadline will not be reviewed for 2013, but will be forwarded to the selection pool for 2014.
  6. All the films in a language other than English must be subtitled in English.
  7. A cover of a Film must contain: Title of the film, Full name of the Director's, Duration of the film, the original languages of the film and Date of Completion of Production.
  8. Publicity materials.

SELECTION

  1. The selection committee appointed by Indigenous Film Archive will select all films.
  2. The decision of the committee will be the final verdict and no legal claim to participate in the festival can be filed.
  3. Indigenous Film Archive reserves the right not to disclose any comment or reason for not selecting films for the program.
  4. A film, once selected shall not be withdrawn.

4 members Jury: 3 International and one national.

Awards

  1. 3 awards: Golden Drum, Silver Drum and Bronze Drum for the best 3 films.
  2. Public Choice Award with cash prize
  3. Encouragement Award for the Best Nepali Film with cash prize
  4. Jury Award

Deadline for the Final Submission

No later than 30th March 2013 (Nepali year: Chaitra 18, 2069). Films submitted later than deadline date will not be accepted.

Conclusion

Film Directors of selected films will be invited to the festival. The organizers will provide local accommodation for only one person.

Selected films will be screened at NIIFF 2013 in Kathmandu and other cities of Nepal within a period of one year.

The submitted films and publicity materials will not be returned. They shall be archived and listed at IFA.
