Figurative Language Project

Please review the options on the below Menu. Be sure to complete specified number of items from the Menu. Completed Project is due on Friday, June 17, 2016. Students will be provided with at least three class periods to work on the project in class. However, students will complete parts of the Project outside of class.

Figurative Language Café Learning Menu

Appetizers-Choose Two

·  Write a poem showing four types of figurative language. The poem must be at least eight lines in length.

·  Write a letter to a friend using at least four kinds of figurative language in the text. The letter must be at least 10 strong sentences in length.

·  Find a poem using multiple types of figurative language and graph the number of times the following types of figurative language are used: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole.

·  Create a picture dictionary for these terms: simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole. Each picture should be on its own piece of paper (8 ½ x 11-computer paper)

·  Make a set of flash cards that describes four types of figurative language.

Side Dish: Choose One

·  Write a short story about a homework machine. Include one simile, one personification, and one metaphor. The short story should have a clear conflict and resolution with a beginning, middle and end.

·  Make a wanted poster using at least 2 metaphors and include an illustration.

·  Make a comic strip with at least 6 comic strip boxes. The comic strip will include at least 2 metaphors and 2 examples of onomatopoeia.

Entrée: Choose One

·  Choose two poems using multiple types of figurative language and compare the themes and meaning of the two poems.

·  Write a one scene play that shows personification of at least three items.

·  Examine a musician who uses figurative language in his/her music and the meaning behind a specific song. Be sure to explain the reason the musician may have included that figurative language. How does the figurative language impact the meaning? Your written response should include at least 8 strong sentences.

Dessert: Choose One

·  Create a book of four short poems each demonstrating one type of figurative language. These poems must be your original poems.

·  Write 3 math story problems using a different kind of figurative language in each problem.

·  Write 3 jokes or puns using one kind of figurative language in each.

·  Find three examples of allusions in a novel. Be sure to include page number, sentence and explanation of the allusion.
