Isaiah 58:7-10/1 Cor 2:1-5/Matthew 5:13-16

“Thus says the Lord; Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own.”… “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.”

We live in a society afflicted with countless social ills. Crime, addictions, family strife, war, poverty, the list goes on and on. Did you ever think that these conditions might exist as a test of our discipleship? Did you ever consider a way to address these concerns, rather than merely allowing them to go on? Did you ever consider the power we all have to confront and change the world in which we live?

Like educators who say ‘changing one child at a time’ we too can stop, look, listen and then act, rather than see, complain, or worse, turn the other way. From the earliest accounts in scripture, when Joseph provided for his famine stricken brothers in Egypt, through the first Christian communities providing for the widows and orphans, we discover people making the difference in hopeless situations.

Jesus used simple signs to speak of our response, namely salt and light. The former has been used for healing and purifying, the latter to let us see better the cause of dire conditions. Rather than lament the headlines in the paper or lead stories on the news say “I will be salt”, “I will be light” for someone in need this week. Go a step further and bring this subject up with a friend or acquaintance, and then do something together.

We then become signs of the kingdom which Jesus proclaimed.

Our Lady Of Lourdes Feast
On February 11 we will be celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and the World Day of Prayer for Healing. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be administered at our 5:30 Mass. Special guests that day will be the Knights and Dames of the Order of Malta of the Priory of Our Lady of Lourdes. Each year their pilgrimage to Lourdes is attended by 10,000 world-wide members of the Order who bring thousands of sick persons with them to this miraculous shrine of Our Lady.
