Reading

Use the following website to attempt past papers online.

These are set by a different board from ours, but most of the vocabulary tested and question types are the same. The beauty of using this website is that your answers will be marked immediately so that you have an idea how you are getting on. If you come across any vocabulary which you don't understand and can't find in a dictionary make a note of it and ask me – you can e-mail me if you wish: or contact me by leaving a comment via the blog (

Attempt the “Full Course, Higher Tier” papers.

You can also use the BBC Bitesize site for reading practice. See link below.

Listening

There are practice past papers available to download on my blog. You can access the sound files for the past papers by going to the MCS Modern Languages website

and clicking on the icon of the school crest. Then find the French menu on the left hand side of the web page, click on “Grammar” then on “Dulwich College”. Look at the menu on the left-hand side of the Dulwich College site and you will see “Listening Tests GCSE.” There is then a section entitled “Past exams” – click on the year you want to listen to. If you need any more papers than are on the blog let me know and I’ll put more on.

Alternatively you could go to the BBC Bitesize French site and try the interactive listening exercises on there. Once again, make a note of any vocabulary which you don't understand.

You should attempt the higher tier exercises (but no harm in trying the foundation tier first!)

On the bar on the right-hand side there are also “French audio bites” of phrases and revision.

General revision for listening and reading comprehension papers

Learn as much vocabulary as possible. Work through the vocabulary sheets of topics which we have studied this term e.g. holidays vocab, home area vocab, environment vocab, leisure vocab, opinions, places, time phrases, people.

Writing

You need to learn as much of your coursework essay on “My favourite hobby” as possible. The details of the task are included on the final page of our “Temps libre” booklet and I’ll post a copy of the details on the blog also. We have only prepared for an essay on TV or sport.

If you want to write about TV use the sentences which we translated (pages 16 and 17 of the “Temps libre” booklet. The answers are also on a Power Point presentation which is on my blog.

If you want to write about sport use as many of the phrases/sentences as possible from the sheet of impressive language given out in class (and also on the blog).

Try to learn one or two sentences per day. You could also reduce your essay to a form where you have only the first (and maybe last) letter of each word with the other letters replaced by gaps. You could use this several times until you know the material well. You will only have access to a dictionary in the test – no notes. You should only use the dictionary to check spellings, accents, genders and not to dream up new things to say in the exam itself.

When using the blog, the easiest way to find all the material which you need is to use the “tags” to find what is relevant for 5th Form/GCSE coursework/revision etc.

Bonne chance!
