Field Trip to Natalica Zoo

You are planning a field trip to Natalica Zoo. There are 126 students that will be going on the field trip. Use this information and the information on the Natalica Zoo brochure to help you answer the planning questions below.

  1. Your class had a few fundraisers this year. If they raised $1036.25 from selling candy bars, $524 from dance ticket sales, and $206.58 from Valentine flower sales, how much did your class raise altogether?
  1. According to the Natalica Zoo brochure, how many chaperones (adults) are needed?
  1. If each bus can hold 40 people, how many buses are needed?
  1. Bus drivers are paid $5.65 an hour. If the field trip is going to last 6.2 hours, how much will it cost to pay all of the bus drivers?
  1. Using the map on the Natalica Zoo brochure, how many miles will each bus have to drive to take the students to and from Natalica Zoo?
  1. The first 5 miles of a bus trip are no charge to the school, but each mile after 5 miles costs the school $0.51. How many miles is the school going to have to pay for for all the buses?
  1. The school board requires students on a field trip to wear name tags. If you buy 10 extra name tags, how many name tags should be bought?
  2. The school board requires that the number of lunches bought should be 1.2 times the amount of people on the field trip. How many lunches will need to be bought?
  1. The school board also requires that the number of drinks that are bought should be 2.5 times the amount of people on the field trip. How many juice boxes should be bought?
  1. Fill in the chart below to help calculate the total cost of the field trip.

Quantity needed / Price / Total
Student admission
Adult admission
Bus driver pay
Bus mileage
Name tags
Lunches
Juice boxes
Total Cost of Field Trip
  1. The class wants to use all of its fundraiser money to pay for the field trip. Do they have enough? If not, how much more money do they need to have?
  1. How much more money will each student need to bring to cover the costs of the field trip?
  1. Look at the two online deals to Ocean World.
  1. If your family was going to go to Ocean World, which deal would be cheaper? Explain your reasoning below. (You can use the back of this sheet if you run out of room.)
  1. If your family budgeted $300 for the entire trip, would you still be able to go to Ocean World? What are some other factors that you need to consider when traveling? (You can use the back of this sheet if you run out of room.)

Materials needed:

Natalica Zoo brochure

Field Trip to Natalica Zoo planning sheet

Time period: 1 hour

Engage:

  1. Tell the students that they are going to be planning a field trip.
  2. Ask the students to brainstorm a few things they may have to know about to plan their trip.

(They should hopefully say “the cost”, “how far away it is”, “what they would need to bring”.)

Explore:

  1. Give each pair of students a Natalica Zoo brochure. Have them look at it to see what information is given on the brochure.
  2. Ask questions like: “Is the admission price the same for everyone?”, “Why do you say it is the same/different?”, “If you were taking 20 children, how many adults are needed?”, “What is the purpose of having a nametag?”

Generally, you would want to ask questions to point out the information the students will need to use on their planning sheet.

Explain:

  1. Have students work in pairs to complete #1-12 on the Field Trip to Natalica Zoo planning sheet.
  2. Make sure to ask questions such as: “How did you know you needed to multiply/divide on that part?”, “What is your plan for solving this problem?”, “Can we have a decimal answer for this problem? Why or why not?”

Elaborate/Evaluate:

  1. Students will do #13, 14, and 15 on the next page of the Field Trip to Natalica Zoo planning sheet. The questions ask them to choose which online deal is better for their family vacation. They also need to determine whether their vacation budget is large enough and consider some other expenses when taking a trip.
  2. Students will then discuss their conclusions with another student to evaluate their findings.
