Fiddle Week Four

Hello

Resting Tone:
Sing on the Hello Song Resting Tone: “This is the resting tone of this song”.
The resting tone, we also call it the 1 or the first note of the scale, is a very important note. It is the Home Note of the song like Home Base. It is also important because it usually one of the first notes that children will sing. 99.9% of the time in Music Together it is the last note of the song. One of the only songs that doesn’t end on the resting tone is in this collection – Ram Sam Sam! It ends of the 5. But most songs end on the 1, so you can play with the resting tone at home by leaving the last note of the song off. This will give your children a chance to audiate the resting tone or sing it for you. This is why we play with the resting tone in so many different ways. Try it at home! (Teachers – find ways to highlight the resting tone through class – can hold off singing it to see if children will fill it in and use it as a parent-ed for the kinds of musical behaviour parents can look for at home.)

Apples and Cherries - E

  • Sing whole song through 2x with words (including ice cream parts etc)
  • Break the song into a round.
  • I would recommend just sticking to one verse over and over like Apples and Cherries rather than singing the whole songthrough. Be sure you know in your mind how many times you want them to sing it so you can conduct them first group out.
  • Can break into two groups or have the group sing together and you sing the round.
  • Could also have the group sing an ostinato while you sing the song – (1) E two beats. (5) B two beats works pretty well. Could have them rock slowly as they sing so they’re singing one note on one side and another note on the other side.

Marching and Drumming - E

  • PrrrumPruum and Do DoDoot Do Doo bridge that you used in stick song last week. Prrrum = lap action like macro bounce or alternating legs. Do Do = Roll back on the 5 and drop between legs on the 1.
  • Melody = different lap actions. Bouncing, Rocking, Clapping…
  • Can alternate between bridge and melody or bookend with bridge.

Sounds of Fall

  • Break this chant in to parts as well.
  • Start with TseTseTseTse to gain focus
  • Let group know you’d like them to be on the sounds only
  • Break group in half – words/ sounds
  • Big kids in the middle with you for sounds – grown-ups on the words. This will work well if you have more than two big kids. If less than two then perhaps invite them to sit with you or simply join you from where they are sitting. I would also do this only if you have kids 3 and up. I’ve never done it so play around with it and use your best instincts in the moment! 

I’ve Got the Rhythm – A (A, F)

  • Can do it the same way or try it without the CD if you used it or work with suggestions about what parts of the body to move next.
  • Alternating between Macro and Micro beat
  • Sitting
  • Got the Rhythm in my head – head bob Macro / HOT Dog! = Clap/ Head bob Micro
  • Doodle doodle doo verese = Movement Motif (rocking side to side)
  • Hands macro /HOT Dog! = Clap/ Hands Micro
  • To Standing: Doodle doodle doo verese = Movement Motif
  • Standing
  • Toes macro /HOT Dog! = Clap/ Feet Micro
  • Doodle doodle doo verese = Movement Motif (like step together step together)
  • Choose two more body parts or get suggestions for two more reps
  • Doodle back down to sitting

BelaBoya CD (jingle bells or resos)

Jingle Bells:

  • Introduce asymmetric metre123 1212 (all the 2,3’s are the micro beat and the 1’s are the macro). It is an uneven macrobeat and an even microbeat. This is a common Slavic beat. Can contrast with even beat of western culture. 2 on each side or three on each side.
  • Get an action pattern going that highlights this metre. IE: Clap and circle the arms 123, hit legs 12,, hit legs 12
  • Stay with your first action for at least two verses
  • Play around with different ways to highlight the metre on the macro beat and then can also play with the even micro beat as well as using the whole phrase to highlight the big beat. IE bang arms up up, bang arms up up so you’re only catching the beat on the first 1.
  • Rest of song is imitation and play with micro beat or introduce other ways to find the macro beat metre.

Asymmetric RP’s (NO 1-8 stop play)

Reso Bells:

  • Singing on the 5-1 as you hold the box. “These bells are either the 5 or the 1. The short ones are the 5 and the long ones are the 1”. Talking: “The only rule with this instrument is that parents hold onto your stick (if you can)! It’s YOUR stick. Then you’ll be able to model the rhythm.” Hand out one to the child and one to the parent – two parents with one child share a bell in a full class. Keep one for yourself!!!
  • Get them playing with the bells. Then gather everyone is on the asymmetric metre. 123 12 12. Find different ways to play the rhythm to lead the group. IE. Can play with these variations while singing the song:
  • Tapping on Macro – Bell (123), plastic (1,2) plastic (1,2) / Plastic, bell bell
  • Tapping Micro – even beat on bell or plastic
  • Big beat hit bell and with stick flying up and away – whole phrase 123 12 12
  • Let’s here the 5 = Bye Bye – now the 1’s = Bells

Can You Do This? CD or not – starting notes = C E F# G

  • Can do the same as last week or turn off the CD and be open to kids actions or gathering ideas from families. You could also change up the actions if you like.
  • Can you do this = action of your choice which is anchor action for this lyric
  • Call and Response on action verses - Wiggle my fingers/make them fly
  • Reach the sky (to standing)/ Touch the ground
  • Clap my hands/stomp my feet
  • Jump up high/spin around
  • Tippy toe/peek-a-boo
