Below is a list of the Summer Reading assignments listed according to grade level. Please select books from the grade level that your child(ren) will be attending in September 2016.

Assignment:

It is very important to read to your child each night. During the first week of school, your child will be asked to bring the names of one fictional and one informational text that he or she especially enjoyed. Then, in class, he/she she will draw a picture of his/her favorite part from each book.

FIRST GRADE

Please read fiction and nonfiction books. In order to foster a love of reading, the books to read are free choice within your child’s reading level.

Assignment:

Please complete the reading log after your child finishes a book. The reading log lists the title of the book, wheter the book was fiction or nonfiction, and the number or stars you would give the book from 1 star to 3 stars. (See attached reading log.)

Assignment:

Choose three books to read. Students will be required to write a mini-book review on one book from their list. They will also be required to create a main character bookmark on a different book from their list. These assignments will be done in class. Students are advised to take notes on the books as they read them so they do not forget important facts.

Read TWO novels from the list above. Choose one book that you have read to complete the following project.

Project: Use a cereal box to tell about your book. Cover your box with paper. Write title, author, illustrator, and copyright on the front of the box. Write a summary and evaluation of the book on the back of the box. You might want to add phrases and illustrations all over the box. Make your box look catchy so people will want to read the book.
