PRINCIPAL ACHIEVEMENTS

This report contains the activities carried out until 30 September 2008.

Outcome I : Exchanges with other ornithological associations to encourage them to join the membership ABC and to develop the membership ABC in Madagascar moving.

· A meeting with association of the tourist guides of Antananarivo took place in PBZT on July 8th 2008, with 45 participants to explain the objectives of the ABC and their advanta-ges if they are adhered to the ABC.

· At each ordinary or extraordinary General Meeting of Asity, the Representative of the ABC Madagascar always did a short intervention to incite the members to join the ABC.

· 19 tee-shirts in stock were distributed to make publicity of the existence of ABC in Madagascar to local resources people who work in the sites of research projects of ABC members to justify them to preserve the birds and that they carry them when visitors come to see their area and to show that they helped the members of ABC and participate to the conservation of birds and their habitats (Besalampy and Antsalova with Marc Rabenandrasana with Sakalava Rail project, Baie of Baly with Julien RAMANAMPAMONJY with bird monitoring at Baly baie, West of Madagascar, and other sites )

Periodic contact by email with the ABC members in Madagascar to ask them their situation or their ideas to start activities unspecified, or their availability of time

MEMBERSHIP 2008 situation

Among the 12 members registered in 2008:

· 09 have paid 2008 subscription until now , only one did not pay yet and 2 directly paid their contribution with the ABC (Dr. Lily and Bruno BOEDTS), 1 did not pay until now (Marc Rabenandrasana, I did not know if he paid directly to ABC)

Not too many members from Madagascar

Outcome II : The education of the young people and the popular mass for the conservation of the birds is reinforced

· 5 bird watching events giving a total of 150 young from primary and secondary schools ( 3 on February -March, 2 on 15 and 28 September ) achieved in 2008 to identify the birds of the PBZT Heronnery to help them to know about malagasy birds in order to protect them.

· Activities of birdwatching for visitors of the PBZT and pupils: 5 special birdwatchings were made in the year with 8 monitors from Education Commettee of Asity, ABC and PBZT employees receiving a total of 550 participants. These activities showed the close cooperation between the PBZT, Asity and the ABC Madagascar for the materials used and certain transport ( ABC took in charge of some transport of the monitors and the materials).

STRONG POINTS

Prepare multiple posters A4 format to help pupils and young students during birdwatching, etc

The various activities of education awarness to conserve the malagasy species of birds and their habitats were achieved in 2008.

WEAK POINTS

Few people are interested to be adhered under pretext which the amount of the fixed contribution is too expensive for them. It is true that the malagasy people do not have the practice of cotiser to more Ar 10 000 in an association or club in spite of the advantages which they can receive there because of weak purchasing power.Let us take an example, a Malagasy student if it receives a full bourse, receives only Ar 30 000/mois or a professor bechelor degree, 20ans of teaching which gains only Ar 400 000/mois (£ GBP 100/mois)

Note: We did present any work plan for 2008 but we have just continued the 2007 activities.

SUGGESTIONS

Always take part in activities of mass education awarness and pupils (birdfairs and birdwatchings) in PBZT , Antananarivo or in other regions.

I would like to inform you that I am always very busy. So it is more interesting to find a new Madagascar ABC Representative from now.
