FIAT: THE LOWEST CO² ACROSS THE RANGE OF ANY CAR MAKER

For the second year running Fiat has been revealed as having the range of cars with the lowest average carbon dioxide emissions of any brand and, to add to the Italian car maker’s environmental success, The Fiat Group, which includes the supercar brands Ferrari and Maserati, also has the lowest CO² emissions of any automotive group, figures produced by JATO Consult, a division of the world’s leading provider of automotive data, have revealed.

The figures, which cover sales in 21 European countries, also show that the Fiat Group, with a group wide figure of 138.4 CO² g/km, is the only car maker to beat the industry carbon dioxide target of 140 CO² g/km by the end of 2008.

“It’s one thing to have one very green model in your range of cars, but quite another when the average of every car you have sold produces the lowest figure of any car maker,” says Andrei Zaitzev, General Manager for Fiat in Australia. “This proves that every car you sell is making a contribution to saving the environment and you not using one green flag-waving model to hide the sins of all your other models. The fact Fiat maintains this position, even when all the models sold across the group, including the Ferrari supercars and Maserati’s supreme high performance luxury saloons and coupes are included, proves that when it comes to real world environmental technology, Fiat is the benchmark against which all others must be measured.”

Fiat’s environmental performance is matched in Australia, with Fiat the only car maker to have every model in its range represented in to the top ten greenest cars on sale, as measured by the Australian Government’s Green Vehicle Guide, and the Fiat 500 JTD is the most economical car on sale in Australia.

Key highlights of the report reveal that, FIAT has once again achieved the lowest volume-weighted average CO2 figure of Europe’s top selling brands at 133.7g/km, down from 137.3g/km in 2007. Peugeot sits in second place, the only other volume manufacturer to achieve a sub-140g/km figure, with an average of 138.1g/km. Citroen, its PSA sister company, is in third place at 142.4g/km. The top five places are completed by Renault (142.7g/km) and Toyota (144.9g/km).

JATO is also quick to point out that manufacturers are achieving reductions despite the factors that are often contrary to lowering CO2 emissions.

“Introduction of ever tightening safety legislation and the demand for customer convenience and comfort features is increasing the weight and mass of vehicle structures,” says David DiGirolamo, Head of JATO Consult.“Against the odds, manufacturers are producing heavier, safer cars whilst still improving their environmental credentials.”

Vehicle Manufacturer Group Performance
The 2008 report coincides with the target for European manufacturer groups to achieve an average CO2 figure of 140g/km by 2008 as previously agreed by ACEA with the EU. Even though the target has not been achieved by the whole car market, the average for 2008 was 153.7g/km; both the FIAT Group and PSA Peugeot Citroen appear to have managed this target on schedule, with Fiat the only company to actually beat the target. A new target of

130g/km has been set by 2015.

FIAT / 138.4
PSA Citroen / 140.1

JATO’s analysis is conducted on 21 countries of which 19 are EU member states and is extracted from a full report that studies volume-weighted CO2 emissions by country, segment and brand, whilst also providing an in-depth analysis of the effects of CO2-friendly vehicle technology and CO2-based taxation regimes across the individual markets.
