FFA Veterinary Science CDE Individual Skills Practicum Rubric

Procedure: Viewing parasitic slide with proper objective for suspected parasite
Time Limit: 2 minutes / Possible Points / Awarded Points
Student rotated nosepiece if necessary to lowest power objective setting (4X) / 5
Student turned on power / 5
Student ensured that the iris diaphragm is sufficiently open / 5
Student picked up the slide, handling the slide by the edges only / 5
Student placed slide on microscope stage as appropriate for the type of microscope used (mechanical slide retainer or slide clips) / 5
Student centered the specimen on the stage. Student viewed slide alternately from side and front to get a best estimate of center of the stage (directly over the light) / 5
Looking through the oculars, the student used the coarse focus adjustment until the specimen came into focus / 5
Student then focused using the fine adjustment knob / 5
Student scanned the slide moving in a grid-like pattern (side to side or up and down) to find a field that is characteristic or contained the specimen / 5
Student centered the desired specimen in field of view / 5
Student rotated the nosepiece to select the 10X objective / 5
Student focused using only the fine adjustment knob. / 5
Student checked and adjusted the iris diaphragm to provide the right amount of light / 5
*Task is Complete. Microscope will be returned to starting position by event staff.* / _ / _
