Spoke cuts: From ½” FF cut 5 @ 28” and 11 @ 22”. From 3/8” FF cut 4 @ 19”. Soak the spokes along with a short strand of 3/16” FF in warm water for 2 – 3 minutes. Mark the centers of the spokes on the wrong sides.

Base Layout: Lay the 5 spokes @ 28” horizontally on the table in front of you with the marked sides up. Still working horizontal, lay the 4 spokes @ 19” BETWEEN the 28” spokes with NO space between lining up the center marks. Vertically weave the 22” spokes. Start the first spoke down the horizontal center starting OVER. Weave five more 22” spokes on each side of the vertical center with ½” space between the spokes, lining the center marks up. Square the base to measure 4 ¼” x 10 ¾”.

Working with both ends of the 19” spokes, they will be bent over the last vertical spoke, trimmed and tucked under the 3rd spoke on the base of the basket.

Weave a locking row with 3/16” FF, mitering the corners and overlapping the ends by 4 spokes.

Re-wet and upset the spokes.

Side Weaving: Weave 3 rows of ¼” FF dyed green.

Weave 15 rows of ¼ FF natural, keeping an eye on the shape of your basket, especially the corners.

Weave 1 row of 3/8” FF.

Pack all weaving.

Cutting, Tucking and Handle: Cut all the spokes on the inside of the last row of weaving flush with the top of the basket. The handle of the basket will lay over the last row of weaving, directly on top of the center spoke, on the back of your basket. (Which should be a cut spoke.) Tuck all the spokes on the outside of the last row of weaving to the inside of the basket under 2 – 3 rows of weaving. The two spokes on each side of the handle will be tucked OVER the wire of the handle to hold the handle in place.

Rim: Rim the basket with ½” FO on the inside and outside of the basket with a 3” overlap on each rim. Fill the center of the rims with seagrass. Lash the rim on the basket with ¼” FF.

After you have stained your basket and let it dry for several days, you may use a hot glue gun to add the accessories. Mushroom birds of all sizes, birdhouses, a house 4 wrent sign and a fence are my favorites.
