Fellowship and Development Officer

The Society is looking for someone whowilldeliverstrategic and operational activity to supportour membership (called Fellows) and increase the sustainability of the Society. This will include day-to-day engagementwith and services to Fellows and the promotion of the work of the Society. The post-holder will be expected to increase Fellowship and related income streams and engage with Fellows and potential Fellows.

Starting Salary: £24,766 to £27,279 plus a 10% pension contribution.

Hours: Full time 37 hrs per week or part-time to be negotiated, for a fixed term of one year (or more if part-time) with the possibility of extension thereafter.

Main responsibilities:

  1. Fostering Fellowship.
  2. Increasing Fellowship numbers and retaining existing Fellows.
  3. Fundraising, including from:

a) Fellows and other individuals

b) trusts and foundations

c) the corporate sector.

  1. Raising the profile of the Society and its work.

Skills/Knowledge/Experience - Essential

  • Relevant degree level qualification or equivalent professional experience of managing a successful development campaign.
  • Demonstrable experience of membership development.
  • Demonstrable experience of fundraising.
  • Demonstrable experience of client relationship management.
  • Highly developed communication skills; both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrable ability to identify, progress and manage funding opportunities.
  • Database and social networking skills.

Skills/Knowledge/Experience - Desirable

  • Knowledge of the Society and the Scottish heritage sector.
  • Knowledge and experience of using membership databases; the Society database is currently EnterpriseMRM, moving to Tribe.
  • Demonstrable experience of working independently, creatively and flexibly while in a small collaborative staff team.
  • Entrepreneurial outlook.
  • Event Management skills.
  • Proven success of generating income from donors, trusts and/or foundations for a charitable organisation.
  • Demonstrable understanding of charity law and fundraising techniques.

Context:

The post-holder will be a member of a small professional staff team working for a Society that has been around for over 230 years, actively supporting the study and enjoyment of Scotland’s past. Founded in 1780 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1783, the Society’s purpose is “to investigate both antiquities and natural and civil history in general, with the intention that the talents of mankind should be cultivated and that the study of natural and useful sciences should be promoted”. As a charity, the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland relies mainly on members (called Fellows) for its independence and the majority of its income, and is looking to improve its sustainability and increase its support for research into Scotland’s past. There are currently just under 3,000 Fellows across the globe, the majority in the UK. The Society leadsScARF, the exciting Scottish Archaeological Research Framework, and works with Archaeology Scotland to deliverDig It!, a national project celebrating Scottisharchaeology.

The Society is a charitable organisation registered in Scotland (SC010440) and governed by a voluntary elected Council of Trustees. The post-holder will report to and be line-managed by the Director, and will work with and report toTrusteesas required. The post-holder will be part of a small staff team, with support from Trustees and other volunteers as necessary.

Salary:
The salary range is between £24,766 to £27,279 per annum and placement within that scale will be dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary is based on an incremental system, subject to satisfactory performance, with an additional award considered annually to reflect cost of living increases. Any incremental increase and/or cost of living increase is determined by the Trustees.

Hours:
Full-time, normally working a 37-hour week, Monday-Friday. Flexibility in working hours is essential, however, as the post requires evening and weekend work. This will include attendance at the Society evening lectures, and attendance at conferences and meetings at weekends.

The Society may also consider part-time working for this post.

Annual Leave:
There is an Annual Leave allowance of 38 days which includes the statutory 28 days and public and privilege holidays(adjusted appropriately in the event of a part-time appointment).

Probation:
There will be a probationary period of three months after which either side may terminate the appointment with one month’s notice.

Pension:
The Society will make a contribution equal to 10% of the annual salary towards a Pension Fund.

Location:
The Society staff accommodation is located in the National Museum of Scotland building in Chambers Street, Edinburgh. Society staff must comply with National MuseumsScotland policies regarding security, access, health and safety, smoking etc. Some home working can be considered.
