School breakfast fuels academic success. Yet, each day too many Tennessee students miss out. Make this semester the best one yet: take the Breakfast Challenge!

Regional Goals

  • At least 1,600 more students connected to school breakfast.
  • 5 additional schools doing a Breakfast after the Bell program in spring 2017.

Challenge Categories and Contest Rules/Eligibility Criteria

All public schools in Northeast Tennessee are eligible to participate in one category.

1 Breakfast Champion (The winner will receive a trophy and $1,000)

  • To compete, you must enroll at All public schools located in Northeast Tennessee (Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, Washington Counties) are eligible to participate.
  • Anyone can enter a school to compete (FNS Directors, Administrative Staff, Teachers, Parents, and/or students).
  • The school with the highest increase in breakfast participation will become the breakfast champion.
  • The competition starts January 1, 2017 and concludes on March 31, 2017. Participation will be measures on average during this period as total breakfast Average Daily Participation (ADP) over total enrollment. Percentage increase will be calculated by comparing this average to October 1, 2016-December 31, 2016.

School Enrollment

  • Willingness to promote the challenge through social media (if available) and school district communication channels. Please tag Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee on Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter. Use #TNBreakfast.
  • This funding can be used for any school improvement (school meals, gym or playground equipment, books, computers, art supplies, etc.)
  • Go to to learn ways to increase breakfast participation.

5Grand Prize Winners ($1,000 each)

Public schools located in Greene, Hawkins, Sullivan, and Washington County are eligible to participate.

  • To compete, you must apply at by February 7th, 2017.
  • Schools that are interested in applying should coordinate with their district FNS office.
  • Schools currently serving a traditional breakfast (served and consumed in the cafeteria) that plan to implement a new Breakfast after the Bell Program in spring 2017 (January-May) is eligible to participate in this category.
  • Breakfast after the Bell, also known as an alternative breakfast model can be Breakfast in the Classroom, Grab and Go, Second Chance, or a combination thereof.
  • This funding is intended to help with costs for equipment, supplies, or materials associated with expanding participation in the school breakfast program.
  • Must have strong stakeholder support from school leadership and staff.
  • Make reasonable efforts to continue the program.
  • Willingness to promote the challenge through social media (if available) and school district communication channels. Please tag Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee on Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter. Use #TNBreakfast.
  • Grand Prize Winners will not be eligible for the Breakfast Champion category.
  • Final report Due May 31st

Honorable Mention Schools

Schools starting a universal free breakfast program, CEP, or a Breakfast after the Bell Program from January 1, 2017-March 2017 will be recognized for their incredible work.

February 14th: Grand Prize Winners Announced

April: Breakfast Champion Announced

May 31st: Grand Prize Final Report Due
