Federal Internships by agency:

General requirements for federal agencies include:

  • All interns must be a U.S. citizens (or hold a valid work permit for some agencies)
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate studies program from an accredited school.
  • Other requirements vary depending on the agency.

Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) -

The ATF Outreach Program provides internship programs for college students as part of the Student Educational Employment Program. There are two components consisting of the Student Temporary Employment Program and the Student Career Experience Program. For further information, interested students should call (202) 927-4770.

Department of Justice, Office of Public Affairs (DOJ)

The DOJ Office of Public Affairs has several intern positions available during each quarter/semester. The Public Affairs Office offers volunteer and academic credit internships to undergraduates and to law students. Acceptance of students is contingent on permission of their school. The student will assist press officers with telephone calls from the national news media, assist with interviews and press conferences, and edit and issue news releases and information on a variety of law enforcement topics. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)

ICE has a Student Volunteer Program which offers unpaid training opportunities to undergraduate students seeking an internship opportunity. This program may provide work experience related to the student’s academic program and also provide them an opportunity to explore career options. There is a mutual agreement that must be signed by the student, the school and an ICE representative. Interested students should work closely with their Internship Coordinator by having them contact the ICE Program Manager via e-mail:

Social Security Administration (SSA)

The SSA-Office of Policy accepts applications from most social science disciplines for internships. Unpaid positions are available for undergraduate students and some paid positions are available for graduate students. Every region has different positions available depending on quarter or semester hours. Interested students should contact the SSA office in there area for additional information on applying for internships in their local area.

United States Marshals Service, Western Washington (USMS)

The USMS has unpaid internships available on a quarterly basis. Students must be enrolled at a college or university as a full time student in their junior/senior year or graduate level. The student must be able to work on a mutually agreeable schedule approved by the USMS. There is a mutual agreement that must be signed by the student, the school and a USMS representative. Interested students should submit a resume to the USMS Administrative Officer for the Western District of Washington.

United States Probation Office, Western Washington (U.S. Probation)

The U.S. Probation office has four officers in the Western District of Washington. There are located in Everett, Seattle (headquarters), Tukwila, and Tacoma. The internship program provides an extensive overview of the Federal criminal justice system. Students are required to commit for a minimum of six months (or two terms of school) and an average of 12 hours a week.
