Volume 90, Issue 03 February 10, 2010
Part One
Lent is almost here and that means that Ash Wednesday is right around the corner. Ash Wednesday falls on February 17th, with the Service of Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion beginning at 7:30 p.m. right here at St. John’s. For the next 5 Wednesdays in Lent we will resume our mid-week Lenten dinner/study. The schedule is:
February 24 – at St John’sMarch 3 – at St. John’s
March 10 – at Grace LutheranMarch 17 – at Trinity United Methodist
March 24 – at Christ United Methodist
Each Mid-Week Lenten program will begin with soup and sandwiches at 5:30 p.m. This year we will begin with a movie which we will watch over the first two Wednesdays. The last three Wednesdays we will then have discussions of various topics that vignettes from the movie raise about faith and life and how it all changes the way we live.
The movie is called “The Ultimate Gift” starring James Garner, Brian Dennehy, Abigail Breslin, and Drew Fuller to name a few of the cast. When his wealthy grandfather dies, trust fund baby Jason Stevens anticipates a big inheritance. Instead, his grandfather has devised a crash course on life with twelve tasks – or “gifts” – designed to challenge Jason in improbable ways, sending him on a journey of self-discovery and forcing him to determine what is really most important in life.
Abigail Breslin is one of the youngest nominees for an Oscar. Seeing her in this movie will show you why, and of course Garner and Dennehy are real standouts every time they get in front of a camera. Forbes Magazine’s review said: "We can tell you authoritatively that you've never seen a picture like it. Take It's A Wonderful Life, add The Heiress, put in a pinch of The Millionaire and you're starting to get warm." And The Black Star news review said: "Wholesome, family-oriented fare for those interested in instilling old-fashioned values in their kids."
On the Wednesday of Holy Week we will gather at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at 7:30 for a service of Lessons and Carols with the church choirs and the Jubilate Singers providing special music.
Part 2
The Northumberland Ministerium’s Good Friday Service will be held at St. John’s this year; however, it will be done quite differently than we have on past Good Fridays. This year we will meet at the church where it was held last year – St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and have a procession with the cross from there to this year’s host church – St. John’s. The service will not last 3 hours and there will be only one speaker.—The Rev. Brian Beissel.
If you are unable to join the procession, you may come directly to St. John’s and wait in the church sanctuary for its arrival and the continuation of the service. We still have to work out all the details, but we are tentatively planning to begin the service at St. Mark’s at 12:30 p.m. More details will be shared in worship and at the mid-week gatherings.
Rev. Dale F. Biesecker, Jr.

Thinking of Lent
Advent prepares us for Christ’s birth; Lent prepares us for the glorious act of Christ’s resurrection. Churches have special services during the weeks of Lent, but it’s what each of us does regarding our spiritual life that makes Lent most meaningful.
Lent is a good time to read, study and inwardly digest the four gospels. (The word gospel means “good news.”) A college student decided to work his way through Matthew, Mark, Luke and John for his Lenten devotional time. Soon he was fascinated by the stories, such as the Pharisees and Sadducees trying to trap Jesus in debate. The brilliant Jesus handled every occasion with wisdom, leaving the authorities dumbfounded.
During his devotional time, the student was filled with laughter and amazement at the brilliant son of God, who was only in his 30s. Get to know the good news, and you’ll understand the young man’s amazement.
