Bay Sheffield fever hits Adelaide for the 122nd time

The South Australian sporting public will once again be treated to two days of free entertainment at Colley Reserve on the weekend of December 27 and 28, with the 2008 Bay Sheffield Carnival attracting 693 nominations from athletes around Australia, up from 637 in 2007.

Four-time National 100m champion Joshua Ross will headline the 122nd Coopers Bay Sheffield over 120 metres, the state’s richest and most famous footrace. With the handicapper sure to allocate the Olympian the scratchmark, Ross knows what it is like to win from a tough handicap, being only the second runner to win Stawell Gift off scratch in 2005. Also a winner of the famous Easter footrace in 2003, Ross is yet to claim a sash in South Australia, having been a narrow runner-up in the 2004 Coopers Bay Sheffield behind Andrew Steele and in the 2006 Mt Gambier Gift behind Keith Sheehy. Ross is coming to Adelaide this time around on a comeback trail after taking a few months off from the sport. If he is able to win the December 28 sprint, he will become the first man to win off scratch in the 122 year history of the Bay Sheffield.

There are six former Bay Sheffield champions entered in this year’s race – Craig Brown (2000), Keith Sheehy (2001), Todd Bateman (2003), Andrew Steele (2004), Clay Watkins (2005) and Damian Tohl (2007). Other locals considered a good chance of performing well include Robbie James, Dale Woodhams, Ryan Hancock, Aaron Harrison and Russell Scott.

Three-time Olympian Tamsyn Lewis will be running in the Bay Sheffield Carnival for the 10th time in a row and will line up in the 550m and 120m women’s races. She will go in as defending champion in the 550m race and will be able to test her versatility in the 120m Women’s Gift, where she will face a very strong field, including former winners Kate Mandalovic and Lynette Mattingly and South Australia’s premier sprinter Leanne Hodge.

The 2008 event will once include a giant video screen for spectators, a Bay Sheffield Calcutta to be held at Colley Reserve and the announcement of new inductees into the Bay Sheffield Hall of Fame.
